I like Austria as a well coached team that play a very disciplined 4-2-3-1 formation. They had an impressive qualification run leading up to the World Cup with an 8W 1D 1L record in their past 10. A huge absence today is midfielder Baumgartner of Leipzig. He is their rock in the middle of the pitch , transitioning defence to offence for them. Argentina have a front 6 of Messi , Martinez , Almada , Frenandez , Mcallister and de Paul. Thats a lot of talent and experience to overcome imo

I was referring to last summer FIFA club World Cup that was held here in US. There were many delays and interruptions. It was horrendous.

Lightning only seems to be considered a risk to players in the USA. Never seen this rule in other countries that I know of.

I'm not sure there has ever been a player injured in the USA inside a major stadium anyway. The stands are so much higher than the surface that strikes cant get down there.

Not sure there has ever been a fan hit inside a major stadium either?

I know of some fans struck in the car park when told to evacuate the stands though...

Nah. Maybe if a thunder storm actually decends on a stadium they will suspend play, but none of the stuff telling everyone to evacuate if a single strike is detected 20 miles away.

Seriously, it's an American centric thing. I assume to do with what insurance risk assessors decided once and everyone just followed along.

Its about tracking the storm and potential .... keeping people safe... geez out on fires we have NWS (national weather service) giving updates.... 20 miles away.... great time to give people a heads up and find cover.....

The files that came up from Europe, and all other continents , was too large to share here. It cited many examples of games delayed across Europe for that very reason. It is for the safety of the players and spectators. We have also seen it during the NCAA Football playoffs recently as well. Just google that very question " What are the official rules regarding a thunderstorm during a soccer game ". Its a Global Rule.
