(NFL) Commentary on changes - on eve b4 Sunday kickoff (2025)
Changes that I would have Expected and/or Need to be Made:

    1) Kickoff rule: Needs to be reversed.
...Baseball messed with the rules. And they're tinkering with history. Bad move.
...The new kickoff rule is a complete joke. I'm OK with a Fair Catch pushing the ball to the Max (25, spot of catch).
...Why would fans pay full-fare at the Roman Coliseum when you took the hitting out of the game?

    2) Thursday Nite games: need to be scratched.
...I'm good w/ the Season-Opening THUR game and the traditional Thx-giving games.
...Other than that, scrap the THUR games. Players hate it.
...Football schedules = Rest and Game-Prep. It ties to a specific schedule. You don't play on 4 days of rest.

    3) Expansion to add two European teams.
...And I don't think it will be Jaguars moving to London. Jags have a good foothold in Jacksonville.
...All the London games have been a testing ground. Europe would support teams in London/Paris.
...Don't laugh. It can happen. The first Trans-Atlantic pro sports league.
...Trade-off would be eliminating the THUR games. Extra window = Sunday morning (930am Eastern).
...Rams are playing in London this year. NFL has shown that it's logistically possible.

    4) Reducing Exhibition to two Games. Expanding Regular Season to 18 games (over 20 weeks).
...I think 18 over 20 weeks is the only way the Players Union signs off on it. More recovery time.
...Fans have come to realize how lame Pre-season is. And you can't risk a starter getting injured.
...The teams seem to prefer the inter-squad scrimmages anyway. Good way to tune up for the season.

    5) Playoff expansion to 16 teams.
...See my note above about expanding to 34 teams (if they add two European teams).
...Whether it's 32 or 34 teams, playoff games trump Reg SEA games. Full 16-team bracket works.
...Bye to the 1-seed is too advantageous. Also, they need to re-do the Draft order. No more tanking.

Chucky, regarding point #2...I couldn't care less whether the players like playing Thursday games or not. They get paid a boatload of money so I expect them to entertain us! There are plenty of things that Joe Public does not like at their workplace making 50k/year. Suck it up, Buttercup!!

Yeah, STR. There's only one thing these owners like more than Money. And that's More Money.

Full respect, Jake. The product is poor, b/c of the tight schedule. I don't watch THUR games, it's junk.

Haha fair point, they definitely get paid big bucks to deal with the grind. Still, I can see why the quick turnaround hits them harder than us regular folks at a 9–5. Both things can be true.

Chucky, the product is poor for a slew of reasons and not even the same game we grew up watching(can't we say this about all sports)? I do not watch hardly any live sports anymore because they are a shell of what we used to have. I'm trying not to be a grumpy old man with that mindset but sadly it is true not only for sports but music, movies etc.

If they add 18th game, teams should have 2 buy weeks. Thursday games are fine. They should even have a Friday night game every week and stream it on Netflix, why not make more money?

I always thought playing on Thursday was a flawed idea. They'd be better off switching it to Friday just for the extra day rest. They won't do Saturday because that's stepping on college football's toes. Aside from Thanksgiving, leave Thursday out of it.

I disagree Jake. NFL a great watch and product especially with some skin on the outcome. I guess each to his own but I really enjoy the NFL season. GL Jake

Easy, I never said that I did not watch. I watch mostly Red Zone now and sometimes tune into the stand alone TNF/SNF/MNF depending on the matchup. The SNF game last night was great. That said, I do not think even you can argue that the product is not as good as it once was with all the rule changes over the past decades? Anyways, enjoy the season and good luck on your wagers.
