Without giving away any secrets, what things do you guys focus on specifically when capping. Myself, i tend to try to keep it simple and play home teams and/or some dogs. In fact i will play anything if i feel the team is a realistic chance of winning, but everyone is different and has their own little tricks.

I do pretty much the same as you. If I believe a team can win and the line is acceptable I'll bet it. I'm still learning as I go so I'm sure I'll pick up tips along the way. So far people here have been very helpful in that regard.Comment -

I like this one in college and pro football. Doesn't mean it always comes in but it can get you on the right track:
I always look at teams that have a winning record coming off of a loss going against a team with a losing record coming off a win. Once I establish who they are, then I do the normal handicapping things like turnover ratio, yards for/yards against, power rating, opponent's power rating, etc.........
Having said this, I'm having a horrible year. In the past, it has yielded some good results. This year, not so much. Yesterday in the NFL, KC and Jax would have met this criteria. 0 wins and 2 losses if you bet the spread....... Just food for thought.

I look at a little bit of everything...historical trends, statistical info., home vs. away records, coaching, QB play, weather...from all of that I tried to get a feel for a game...hope that this helps...Comment -
Ideally, I'd love to have seen every play for every team I'm betting. Unfortunately, it's not realistic. Thus, I try to watch what I can and try to digest as many stats as possible as an attempt to understand everything about the teams I bet. I think my approach is closer to scouting than handicapping. But, it's what I enjoy.Comment -

Was just wondering how everybody approaches the same problem.
As i said earlier i try to keep it simple focusing mainly on each teams offensive and defensive abilities, at home on the road etc... to see if their is any definitive advantage. If none i'll go with the underdog, otherwise i will play the favourite. The problem for me usually occurs when i get overly detailed in my analysis, i then find reasons to back both teams and can't make up my mind - like this weekend and boy did i take a bath on most of my plays.Comment -
I use my power ratings and then I look at situations and circumstances. This method typically gives me 7-10 strong plays each week between College and the NFL.Comment -

I agree. It helps a lot to watch games as much as possible to get a feel for a team. I find college sports to be escpecially difficult because there are so many teams, so I try to focus specifically on the Big Ten, Pac-10, and Notre Dame, since I see a lot more of those teams on TV and seem to have a better feel for those divisions from year to year.Originally posted by slacker00Comment -

I combine two criterias :
1) I focus on plays with a high winning probability
2) I apply a super aggressive money management strategy.
This approach has worked out nicely for me. Not more than 1 or 2 plays per week and beat the crap out of them.Comment -
This is a great strategy that most people aren't disciplined enough to implement. There are many people on this forum who have to action every single night instead of waiting for opportunities where they have an edge. i use 3 sets of power ratings and stats. i never bet on the worst 25 teams in the power ratings only against them.in sept and october they were covering less than 40%of their games.Comment -

New to the forum. Been lurking for a couple of weeks and have been getting some good info from everyone. Do any of you have any recommendations where you get most of your capping info? I know I can go to any sports site and get match up info such as offensive and defensive stats but where do you go to get trend information and things like that. I have seen a few sites but most of the ones I have found all they want to do is sell you their picks. I would just like to find some places to go to find any additional useful information that could help me out each week. Even though I have been getting a lot of my info right here. Not sure how wise that is yet

This may come as a surprise to some here but one of the best websites filled with key data is Jim Feist's site.
I am not sure whether he is aware of the quality of the info available on his site. If he only could find a way to use it to become a better capper
