Brad Hand Clears Waivers - VERY BAD Sign For MLB Free Agency
Normally they would have been able to trade this guy. Had 1 year/$10 million left for contract. 29 teams passed on him. Cleveland was hoping somebody would pick him up for that normally reasonable price, and instead will have to pay him a $1 million buyout.

If a quality arm like Hand is not being picked up for just one year, I can just imagine the bloodbath that is about to face mid-tier free agents this year. Collusion will be the most popular word of the offseason.

Given the Phillies 2020 bullpen numbers, claiming Hand at $10 million should have been a no-brainer. They could have let Hector Neris ($7 million option) walk. The $3 million difference would have been well worth it given Hand’s superior track record.

Guy been one of the best bullpen pitchers in recent years, it look like we wont be seeing many big contracts next season.

Agreed. The players are going to have a long winter. I can see spring training camps opening and guys settling for peanuts

Too many uncertainties about fans in the stands. Owners can’t go thru another season without ticket sales. Then the unknown question, will a majority come back after what the players did?

ALL sports are in financial trouble.

NBA figures to lose a billion dollars even by playing 20-21 season because of no fans

Tough situation all around. I would say some players would probably settle for 1 year contracts and retry the market the following year, but there might be a strike in 2022 unless they can iron out a deal with the owners. Players are in a bad situation all the way around.

Trea Turner deserves a huge raise.

Silver Slugger awards announced Thursday. Gonna be funny to see someone other than Trea Turner win for NL SS. Impossible to pick another choice, but he gets zero credit.

Thats not true. They will lose a billion in revenue, not LOSE 1 billion.

Too much uncertainty this offseason. Star players will still get paid if they want a longer deal, or they can come down in number years and bet on themselves when the market is back to normal. Mediocre players are going to have a more difficult time getting dollar amounts they want.

Charlie Morton “wasn’t surprised” that the Rays declined to exercise their $15MM club option on his services, but the veteran right-hander told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times that the team’s decision “doesn’t mean we won’t try to work something out. If there’s mutual interest, the next step is gauging what that looks like.” Rays GM Erik Neander indicated yesterday that the team indeed hoped to bring Morton back for a third season. If an acceptable deal can’t be worked out with the Rays or another club, Morton reiterated to Topkin that he’ll gauge whether he wants to keep playing, weighing such “typical factors” as his health, playing for a contender, and “does it make sense financially and geographically?”

I would say some players would probably settle for 1 year contracts and retry the market the following year, but there might be a strike in 2022 unless they can iron out a deal with the owners. Players are in a bad situation all the way around.
