when I worked for At&t I would volunteer on cable failures to do a night shift. paid more $$ plus the bosses were not hovering over you. It messes with you. After a few nights I did not know what day it was.

I worked graveyard in I/T for 20 plus years, almost my whole professional career.
Banks, insurance companies, retailers, pretty much any business that depends on I/T to process their daily financials need certain onlines up, running and available during business hours.

The reason why almost all businesses that depend on I/T to process their daily transactions have to do so during the at late evening hours or overnight (graveyard hours) because the I/T people need access to the onlines business users need during the day.

Long story short you can't process daily transactions during the day if business is still being conducted.
The software business exec's rely on has to be down so the I/T applications people can access it.
And that software must be available in the day time.

                                  That's a myth.

CIO's (heads of I/T departments) prefer to have their talent on graveyard shift.

                                  Two reasons.

On graveyard shift you have no safety net.
You can't go down the hall to speak to programmer or a technician if there is a problem at 4:20 am.
Those people are at home sleeping.
There are no techs on site on the graveyard shift, nor programmers, nor managers.

I have to problem solve on my own on the overnights.
I have to make the right decisions.
I have so many more responsibilities that people are not aware of.
For instance who do you think is the guy in the data center that has to ensure the business applications and software are up, and available.
Operational and Functional. Without them you can't do business.

The jerkoffs you alluded to the bosses want on day shift.
They are the idiots that need supervision, there is nobody around on night shift to manage or supervise the mentally challenged.
You need to be quick on your feet, alert, and most importantly responsible to do what I do for a living, that being an I/T Mainframe Operations Analyst.

There's a reason why the graveyard I/T professionals make 15 percent on the average more than the day shift professional salary wise.

Now there are drawbacks to working overnights.
It's proven not healthy for you menially and physically.
You don't eat right and you don't sleep right as well when you work midnight to eight for years.

The positive is you are your own boss, oh sure I have to answer to my boss for 15 minutes a morning, but that's it.
I'm not surrounded by suits for eight hours a shift.

One last item I'll leave for you Gold.
One of the big programming manager said this to me about 4 years ago.

"Bill (my given real name) Bill, you're the reason why I and other managers sleep well at nights,"
In my field that is probably one of the nicest compliments one can recieve.
That meant as much to me hearing that as money.
                                  Well almost.

Come on Gold, you're problem is you post to much volume and not enough quality.
If you thought about it for a second you would have realized that the night shift is the most responsible shift and there is no room for jerkoffs, my partner and I wouldn't stand for a slacker on our shift, they are useless without supervision and I am an analyst not a manager or supervisor, not my job man, nor do I want to be a manager, I manage my home, I don't need to manage people who I work with as well.

                                      It's all good Coach.

Every now and then I score a goal.

But yeah, I have three doctors and all three of them can't stress enough to me the importance of sleep.

I don't work the graveyard anymore, I'm on long term disability and I have a nest egg stashed so I'm good.
I got this real bad degenerate hip that the doctors say even with all the surgeries I will walk at 80 percent normal at best.
When I am eligible for retirement I'll work I/T remote from my office here in my condo There are guidelines you have to follow as to how much you can work/earn on retirement.

Looking back on it working overnights was the root to most of my personal life problems.

I worked 7PM to 7AM for about 4 years about fifteen years ago. I became a vampire (would go to bed around 5:30 AM even on my days (nights) off).

The ideal work schedule is 8AM-6:00PM four days a week.
