Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is nearing a deal to join WWE, according to an FS1 report Tuesday.
Details of the reported contract are unknown. It is unclear how Gronkowski will be featured by the wrestling entertainment company. However, he could appear on WWE SmackDown as soon as March 20, per the report. In 2017, Gronkowski worked with WWE, which employs wrestler Moji Rawley, a close friend of his.
Last August, Gronkowski said he could not see himself as a full-time wrestler, but he would entertain the idea of a high-profile match in the future.
“With wrestling, I don’t feel like I would be a full-time wrestler. But there is one thing I’m down for. And that’s to do one crazy match,” Gronkowski said. “Practice it for a little bit, go out there — like in a Royal Rumble. I got my friend in WWE (Rawley); practice it and do a full-on WWE match. I’m not saying when — maybe five years.
“I got the rest of my life to do that. I’ve always dreamed about doing that, just one time, going in there and going full-out.”
Two months later, Rawley noted during an interview that SummerSlam, an annual WWE pay-per-view event, will be held in Boston in 2020.
Gronkowski won three Super Bowls over his nine-year career with the Patriots. He made five Pro Bowls, four All-Pro teams and was most recently named to the NFL’s All-Time Team.
