as a few of you have asked for my take on this in the poker room and via pm, I'll throw my two cents worth in on the case.....

as for what it takes to get arrested, and how does it happen after years and years of time, a couple of things:

first, the statute of limitations in whatever state he's being accused of the crime has to have NOT run out; ie, the law still allows for a prosecution of the crime (sex with minors is often, like murder, considered by a state to be prosecuted for ever, ie, there is no limitations period on the crime, and it can be charged whenever).... (i haven't read anything about this case, so don't even know what state it is situated in)

second, for an arrest to be made, the cops have to believe there is probable cause that the allegations are true. I hear there's been an affidavit submitted by the victim, so the cops must have felt the allegations were credible. typically, they'd prefer some form of corroboration of the allegations before wrecking someone's live with a child rape arrest, but it's not necessarily required.... when it involves a sports figure or celebrity, one would think the cops/ d.a.'s office would want to have their ducks in a row, but that's not always the case.....

I know this guy has an ex-wife, and sometimes these allegations come up to be used as leverage by a litigant in a family law matter, but I don't think that's the case here, if the ex-wife has no motivation or angle to shoot.

again, what's required for an arrest (mere probable cause) is a lower, easier burden to meet, than is the burden at trial (proof beyond any reasonable doubt).....

The accuser is a male family member who claims Wetteland engaged in oral sex with him on 3 separate occasions between 2004 and 2006 ... while he was a young child.

Wetteland has been booked for 1st degree felony continuous sex abuse of a child -- and if convicted, he faces up to LIFE in prison. John Wetteland -- the former closer for the New York Yankees -- was arrested in Denton County, Texas on Monday on suspicion of child sex abuse ... official records show.

Details surrounding the alleged incident are unclear -- but the charge specifies that the alleged victim is under the age of 14.

The 52-year-old right-hander was booked and posed for a mug shot. He was later released on $25,000 bond.
