I think the thing you have to look at here is who has the better chance of claiming the #1 spot by the end of the season. Currently Serena has the best chance. With a win she will get 2000 pts and be withing striking distance of safina. The williams sisters and papa know this and are more concerned with the image of the "Williams Franchise" A world #1 spot increase the marketing value of both sisters tremendouly. Tehy can sell more dresses, makeup, tampons, whatever. They will do what will make them the most money in the long run and give this to serena.
