I'm in Houston where my house was turned into an island for almost 2 weeks. 5 foot of water throughout my neighborhood but my house stayed dry thankfully. We're just getting back on our feet and now Irma. I have friends and family all through the islands, south and central Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. This is an unreal hurricane. This thing is going to make a direct Cat 4 hit on South Florida and run right up the center. You feel totally helpless because there is nothing you can do for people in harms way. All we can do at this point is pray while people shelter in place. Lakeland might get 12" of rain but hopefully the winds will die down. Stay safe and keep us updated.

#354that wind interactive map showed top winds in this "bad ass" storm to be only 81 mph and weakening by the hour.... they are down to 72-73 now..... this thing won't even qualify as a tropical depression by the time it hits land.....
the media is loving the ratings they're getting, so they're misleading the shit out of the general public about the severity of this so-called hurricane.....
sad shit............
There is a storm coming and it is going to hit South Florida. It is not a joke and it is not to be taken lightly. Just because you can't find a hurricane symbol on a map isn't going to change facts.
We should never forget...

#359Not buying it, you don't know why he fell off the ladder. Thousands travel the roadway everyday and many die in accidents. When a guy dies in a car accident heading to his office job, they don't usually blame the job on the death.
But maybe we should, after all, no job to get to, no need to drive, no accident. I guess every to and from work fatality auto accident should just be blamed on jobs.
It's a reach, but whatever makes you feel at ease with the storm that hasn't hit Florida yet.
The police officer that died in Houston, driving into 30 feet high water on his way to work was due to the Storm, even though he was going to work. No storm, no water, no need to drive in different directions, no drowning. The most dangerous thing employees do is drive to work, during work and from work. When someone dies while on the job, that is an on the job fatality. In the energy industry this is the highest risk potential for companies. And it's usually a 3rd party contractor working on behalf of the company that gets killed. Doesn't matter, it's still a company related fatality and therefore an on the job work accident. Which means insurance has to pay accident benefits to their family as well.Comment -

#361I know a mom who got into a car accident taking daughter to school, no daughter no ride needed, no accident.
I suppose it was the daughter's fault as well.
The point is that it's not this storm or any other storm that caused a man to get on a ladder and fall off. Since you don't know the circumstances but must make it more complicated, chalk it up to his lifestyle. The how and where he chose to live.
The people in Rita, that were never hit with the storm, sadly, died because of other humans, not the storm.
I know it's easy to blame a storm that hasn't hit yet for the tragedies, but in the end, it's people under pressure that cause the deaths of more people.

#363Maybe he's been listening to Rush Limbaugh, who blamed all the hurricane hype on Big Water, Big Battery, Big Building Supply and the media. It turns out he fell for the hype and fake news as he just evacuated his Florida home.
Limbaugh, who stressed he is not a meteorologist, told his national audience on Tuesday that he believed the press was hyping coverage of Hurricane Irma to “advance this climate change agenda.”
The conservative talk radio king additionally floated another baseless theory, suggesting local news outlets were showering its audiences in storm coverage to scare them into purchasing bottles of water and other supplies from local retailers. Limbaugh said there was a “symbiotic relationship between retailers and local media, and it’s related to money.”
“The local media … reports in such a way as to create the panic way far out, which sends people into these stores to fill up with water and to fill up with batteries, and it becomes a never-ending repeated cycle,” he said. “And the two coexist. So the media benefits with the panic with increased eyeballs, and the retailers benefit from the panic with increased sales, and the TV companies benefit because they’re getting advertising dollars from the businesses that are seeing all this attention from customers.”

We had a man die from a heart attack. Was it the stress from his house flooding? Was it him being out of shape? Could he have lived if paramedics could get to his house? Could he have died even if there wasn't a hurricane? We will never know. But he died during a catastrophe and will always be linked to the event, right or wrong. If you ask his family 20 years from now about Hurricane Harvey, they will tell you that they lost their dad during that hurricane.Comment -

#378Jibby, i would say right wing politics would be more threatening. They lied us into Iraq and now Terrorism is at an all time high. The other countries who are paying for getting sucked into these right wing lies are also paying for it with terrorism. Than u have Stem cell research. Another thing the Neanderthal thinking Republicans blocked just for that asshole evangelical base. The same hypocrites who voted for a three time divoricee and serial cheater. Now our health care has fallen from the very top to mediocre. Than we have the climate change deniers. The problem with this was the messenger which happen to be Al Gore. So now we have 99 percent of the scientist saying we need to take this serious but we have to be led by jackasses who have been wrong about everything. So all progress has been stopped in these areas and two of three have been for the Oil companies benefit who now are gouging the shit out of people and have been a huge part of the problem. Imagine that. Making tons of money because of sucking imbeciles into being climate deniers and U, the Oil companies, are the problem. When it comes to that hard base Republican followers, u see how stupidity is contagious. This party is the Typhod Mary of stupidity.Comment -

#382The models got this hurricane path wrong so far (like they usually do). It appears that Miami will be spared a catastrophic event.
Every model had this thing already making the turn north.

#383Right? All the models keep saying it's going to turn, but it still hasn't started. I'm heading to New Orleans because if it follows the path now it's going to slam right into Tampa Bay. However, it wouldn't surprise me to see it miss almost completely because it keeps going west. Oh well, even if that happens I could think of worse things than a weekend in NOLAComment -

#384Right now it's going to go right up the west coast. The models are inaccurate because they don't know where it'll turn. Now North Florida is overrun with evacuees and there's no gas and no where to go except hunker down.
