I bet Aj just goes tomorrow followed up by Correia or Wandy....they each only pitched a couple innings. After that it'll be back to Jmac.

I heard Mercer is going to be with his wife on "paternity" leave...so they could fill his roster spot for a few days with Locke or Justin Wilson ect to start tomorrow?

I guess good for depth overall and obviously low risk with it being a minor league deal. Didn't know he was already 30, though he was maybe 27-28.

Pirates rotation on paper is actually very strong this year. Should be another fun one at the very least.

Even if this season turns sour Pirates fans can still wax poetic about having the 2 greatest SS of all time, no other franchise can match that at any position.

Pirates extend Clint Hurdle another year on his contract with an option for 2015

good to see that ole Clint might get a chance to be in on the Pirates 2014 100 win season and World Series appearance.

future does not look so good for Matt, he was removed from the 40 man roster and no one picked him up off waivers.

he'll be back in AAA but he'll most likely be on the bench behind another younger prospect. Matt might be like 6th on the organizational depth chart at 1b

edit/update, just read a blurb from a friend down there in Bradenton that Matt was taking infield at 3rd today a place they put him before.

Good to hear. I hate to bother him when he's working. These updates really help me feel closer to family.

Hopefully I can see him at our annual Easter egg hunt.

Lets be real Pirates arent even interested in being a winning team.

If anyone develops into a solid player they will trade him. Cheapest organization is sports history.

very untrue on all accounts. as a St. Louis Cardinal Fan i'd think you would be a little more knowledgable about a central team.

Pirates always get blasted as a team that trades their stars when they get too expensive.
But I bet people can't make a list of even two players who
    a) got traded in part due to large salary
    b) were not shitty players for their next contract
    c) during the last 10 seasons

another note on Aram... the Pirates were forced by MLB to get rid of salary in 2003 due to outstand debt ratio they had. The Pirates were trying to get rid of Kris Benson a team cancer and had a number of offers on the table, but before the deadline and they finalized the deals, Krissy complained of arm soreness and got DL-ed and thus was not able to be traded. Pirates never wanted to trade A-ram, but that deal set them back

    Jason Shimdt
    Joel Hanrahan
    Jason Kendall

i know there are a ton more.

better question is who is good that they havent traded?

Andrew McCuchen and thats it. They are only keeping
him bc if they let him go , nonody would ever go see that
    minor league caliber team.

2004-2013 is ten seasons, any trade made this offseason was for the 2013 offseason you follow? even then you are talking a LONG time ago in professional sport terms. A whole different front office and different ownership...

Laroche is the only other one i'd actually consider, although he wasn't for $ so much as sucking with the Pirates, and he has only had 1 good year himself.....

but that is why I made the list 2 and didn't say 1, cuz you can at least argue for Laroche

Bay had 1 good year and sucked and has robbed the mets of millions.

    same for Sanchez
    same for Mcclouth
    same for Nady
    same for Wilson
    same for Giles
    same for Snell

Bonds left via Free agency by the way (20 years ago!!! )

The Pirates have a rep for trading guys that the public KNOW OF, so the reaction is they are trading stars. But the fact is that they have unloaded them at the perfect time. The Pirates just really suck at getting good talent in return. They are great at unloading dead weight at the perfect time.

as far as the Pirates not spending, they actually set records the last 5 years for spending in the draft, so much so that due to them and a few other MLB teams that can't compete in the free agent market, MLB changed the draft rules drastically.

you mentioned and shrugged off the Pirates locking up McCutch, who else would you like them to have locked up long term in the last ten years?

I'll keep the list according to my guidelines as

    1) Adam Laroche

2013 season hasn't even happened yet. Don't count. Last 10 seasons are 03/04/05/06/07/08/09/10/11/12. Ramirez traded July 2003. Clearly less than 10 years ago if you wanna go by that.

And Jason Bay was solid for his next team, the Red Sox. And Sanchez was plenty good before he got injured. He counts.

    Ramirez
    LaRoche
    Sanchez
    Bay

you gotta count the dollars vs performance for Bay and Sanchez

as a GM would you want to pay that?

would you be happy as a mets fan to be paying jason bay 18 million this season?

as a GM i'd be happy to trade a guy AND get something in return whether it pans out or not instead of paying an aging guy for years of non productivity. Its reality for small market teams

I think the point is that people over react about bad trades the Pirates have made without considering the details, when in fact they've been quite savy.

guess how the Pirates got Bay?

no, the Pirates have about 10 #6 starter types in the rotation. They'll give someone like Gomez, Mcpherson, Locke, Mazzaro take the spot for awhile.

I think the Pirates will try to not rush Cole, and also not start his Arb clock early.

I think their starting rotation is shitty anyways, as they are a bunch of question marks. they really are just a group of 3rd and 4th starters that at their best have shown brief flashes of being #2 starters, but mostly in their career they have been shitty (with the exception of Wandy, who is just washed up)

    Pirates fans,

Just know no matter what you will NEVER win a world series EVER!!!!

It will not happen, no matter what. You guys will probably never even have a winning season again.

It sucks i know. But it is reality. Your owner is a cheap mother rooster_eater and he does not give one shit whether you win or lose.

I hate it for you but its just a fact. The MLB should subtract teams like the
Pirates bc they are essentially a triple A team playing the mLB
