JOHN MADDEN STATEMENT ON KEN STABLER
"I was head coach of the Raiders the entire time Kenny was there and he led us to a whole bunch of victories including one in Super Bowl XI. I've often said, If I had one drive to win a game to this day, and I had a quarterback to pick, I would pick Kenny. ... He was a perfect quarterback and a perfect Raider."

This one hits me hard. One of my favorite quarterbacks of all time. Being a former Oilers fan, it hurts losing him and Bum Phillips in back to back years. I think I'll turn On Demand on tonight and watch the video about their season when the Raiders won Super Bowl XI. RIP Snake! You were one of the best when football was really football.

Hopefully Earl doesn't go soon. I know he was struggling with his health not too long ago. But I think he's a little better.

Read that they were playing Lynyrd Skynyrd and Van Morrison while he was on his death bed. Now that is going out in style.

Jay he was born in 40's in deep south "shocking" IF he was a bit racist. Certainly have never read or seen anything to back up your claim in my life. But seriously how many here have a grandfather or even dad brought up in that era that might drop a racial slur at times. Not saying it's right but pull your fukking outta your ass stop with power lib b.s. and pay some respect...or don't nobody gives a shit!
Also was a leader of a team well ahead of their time far as equal rights and equality mindsets go in sports. R.I.P. Snake true one of a kind and so we're those teams

good childhood memories of rooting the the Raiders.. Ken Stabler
was the first NFL quarterback I ever admired. Both in Oakland and Houston..
by the time he finished at New Orleans I wasn't as much of a football fan..
but the Madden Raiders of the 70s were a kick butt football team and in todays
league I am willing to bet Kenny Stabler would be an elite QB. Like Bradshaw
and everyone of that era he took the types of beatings on the field that is
simply not allowed in today's NFL. A neighbor of mine was on the Raiders
championship team. Still have the photos of me wearing Raider gear and
my Raider waste bucket which I still use.
Thanks for the football memories Mr. Stabler.

If it weren't for the Steelers, the Raiders would have been 4 SB champion "dynasty" of the 70's
The Steelers of the 70's was/is the NFL's all time dynasty bar none...

I'm saddened to hear this- Kenny Stabler was one helluva player. He was the type of QB you both feared and respected for his complete skill at the position and leadership skill. I always admired how well he lead that team- R.I.P. Snake

This was from Earl's Facebook:
Lost another great friend and teammate in Ken Stabler aka "The Snake" really going to miss you buddy. We shared so many great times together. When you first came to the Oilers our lockers were right next to each other and one day I turned around and you were sitting on your bench and to the right of you was country music legend Hank Williams Jr. because of you I got to meet him frequently. Prayers are with you, the family and especially your daughters.
Peace and Love

As a Dolphin Fan he was A huge part of the play I will never forget " The Sea of Hands Game" As a 13 year old it was a devastating loss. In the grasp of Vern DenHerder he threw up a wounded duck that was grabbed by Charlie Smith who probably was the last guy on that team to throw to. I can still see Manny Fernandez hitting Smith in the end zone WELL AFTER the ball was caught, probably should of been a Personal Foul. This marked the beginning of slide to normalcy for the fish, even though we had some more good years and teams....... took another 8 years to go to the next Super Bowl with a guy named Woodley. RIP Snake I really Hated ya back then... in many ways the highest form of respect.

I was drunk just making a joke.
When I was reading this thread at the bar a couple of guys started talking about Kenny & I brought up this hilarious SNL skit I remembered. Tried to find it but was too tanked.
Anyway.
I didn't know he was really a racist, just thought it was a SNL gag.
