Population of 32,000 in this country, they are the worst ranked soccer country team in the world. How do they even field a team every year? Why not join with Italy?

This country has been independent for 1700+ years and people are very proud of it. It's a tradition thing and they are doing OK on their own.
As for San Marino soccer team-players are amateur, not professional. They work full-time, play an international soccer match, grab a beer after the game and go to work the next day or the day after. It is a quite charming country though-been there 10 years ago and was pretty impressed.Comment -
