Chau was caught on camera stealing 800 dollars from a players stack when the player went to bathroom this morning. Todd Brunson tweeting about it. Chau admitted previously to blowing 20 million playing craps.

#52005 espn interview ironically being done at the bellagio with Barry greenstein. Clipped an interesting part.
"There are five top players: There's Doyle Brunson, there's Chip Reese, there's Chau Giang, there's Phil Ivey, there's myself," Greenstein says. "Those are the five people who beat the biggest game. There isn't any tournament player you're going to put in our game who's going to beat it. They'd be drawing dead. They'd be the live ones. We'd play 'til they're broke. But they already are broke, for the most part. The public says, 'Oh he's a great player.' He's a live one in our game.Comment -

#7All the tv poker pros you see are broke. The word "pro" used in the tv world for poker was always a joke. Half of them were never pros. Mostly one hit wonders who ran good for a week.
Guys you see winning a million are busted and in debt 95% of the time.
Chau has been broke for years. Nothing new. I can list 50 players a random person has watched on espn or the travel channel that is broke.
Their tv appearances generated easy ways to beg for money though, but not anymore. Well is dry and most of those stains have nothing.Comment -

Benny I don't disagree with most your statement. All are not broke, but I agree a huge percentage of them are broke for sure and you are right the well is dry. The young ones coming up are a little less degen then the ones from my generation. I used to watch the WSOP at Binions in the 1990's I have had friends on the business side of poker for 20 years.
I was watching a WPT final table like ten years ago and they were interviewing one of the players at the final table. The interviewer knew he was a mid stakes Atlantic city pro grinder and she asked him "is this your greatest poker accomplishment?" His answer was classic he said "making this final table is not my greatest achievement my greatest achievement is I have been a poker pro for 15 years, poker is my only source of income, and I have never been broke" I thought that was the best answer a poker player ever gave and I remember it to this day.
Benny I know you will appreciate this because it illustrates perfectly what you just wrote in your post and it's 100% true.
The funniest line I ever heard was when Gus Hansen won a million dollar plus first prize at a tournament ....

#12Not a huge surprise.....I lived that lifestyle for a year (nowhere near what these guys were doing) in 2004. It was the first year they built the River Rock Casino here in Vancouver and I had just moved to the area. The 3-6 NL game was sick and had so much dead money in it that you could get blind drunk and still crush.
I also played in a home game with 8-10 guys that had serious money....frankly I should never have been at their table, but I got a pass because they thought I was funny and liked that I would get super smashed. The buy in for that game was minimum 10k, and I never walked in with more than....maybe 5? Had some huge scores (for me) playing in that game.....the biggest of which I don't really recall much about....all I know is that I woke up in a sick suite not far from where the game took place with one of the cocktail servers beside me and $22k stuffed into the front pockets of my jeans.....what a mess.
In those days it was 'cool' to play....and all of the ballers where doing it, driving their H2's, wearing huge glasses and tattoos were just becoming super cool.....all of the money from these guys' grow ops paid my bills for a year, and I lived well.....BUT, the inevitable happened.....those guys got bored of throwing their money away.....I still wanted to go back to work and played part time for years, but when it turned into playing with 9 nits every day I gave it up....that was probably 4 years ago or so.
It was a fun distraction.Comment -

#31MOST degen poker players bet sports and many play table games as well. The slang term they use for these type of -EV money losing aspects of their lives is "leaks" . If you see a real good cash game or tournament player that is always being staked someone will always be talking about his leaks as to why he is broke. Guys like mike mizrachi, chino rheem, Eric lindgren , all are famous degens that used to crush poker but were always broke. Earlier generations guys like matusow, stu ungar, sam grizzle, tj cloutier, etc etc. Any person with even a little poker history could name 15 guys that are huge sports or table game degenerates. Other types of leaks like drugs and lifestyle also bury some guys like layne flack, once a great player known as "back to back flack because he won two WSOP bracelets in two consecutive events. He and his crew were major party/drug users and it ****** up their careers.Comment -

#32"Unfortunately, winning $20 million in Las Vegas and keeping $20 million in Las Vegas are two different things. I was good at the large cash card games, no doubt. But those games didn’t happen every day, or even every week. Lower-stakes games now bored me. They didn’t hold my attention, or generate the thrill of the high-stakes game. So I sought new avenues for excitement, and unfortunately those avenues were in the casino games, where the house is heavily favored to win.
I began to play craps and baccarat. The experience was a disaster. I lost everything. Everything! I lost all $20 million. What could I do at that point? I had to go back to playing small limits again, but this time I stuck exclusively with poker. No more casino games. I started winning again, slowly at first, with small limits. Before I knew it, I was back up to $200-400 limit games, and then higher limits once I rebuilt my bankroll. It took a while, but I did it."
That's from an old interview. Guy is a great poker player, but a huge degen. Pit games got him.
That being said: Todd Brunson made good money (2.5 million) buying 25% of his action back in the days. Then for some time (years later), Chau Giang had to stack him instead. Chau made comments how he should have never gave him money to play because Todd is such a bad poker player etc. Maybe Todd thought it was time to get his revenge for the comments....
I don't believe the story until it is confirmed by the casino (not so hard to check the tapes).Comment -
