Mack Brown to step down

Texas HC Mack Brown will step down after 16 years, according to Chip Brown of Orangebloods.

Brown cites "high-level sources," and the website is generally the best outlet for Texas football news. The report is not surprising, even though Mack Brown did help turnaround Texas' season. It will obviously be a highly coveted job, but Texas has lost some in state steam to Texas A&M. Vanderbilt's James Franklin might be the best available option, but there is little doubt that Texas will make a strong push for Nick Saban.

Brown is negotiating his buy out.

He is signed through 2020, UT owes him nothing if he steps down.

The negotiated buyout will be in the neighborhood of 5-6 million dollars.

If Texas fires Brown--- they owe him 4.2 every year through 2020.

ESPN denied the report. So did UT and Brown. As Sam eludes to, its about money at this point. Can't hardly blame Brown. If they won't pay him off then he's gonna show up hung over like he did this year.

Can't blame him at all. He's due over $20 million from the University of Texas and the school can't do anything about it. Brown is NOT stepping down free of charge. It's going to cost the school inwards of $10M for him to walk.

He will get 2.7 Million. That is all he has coming to him. The deal is this. The Board of Regents is scheduled to meet on Thursday. if they fire Texas President Powers, Brown is as good as gone. The Board also may force Powers to kick Brown "upstairs" to some Assistant AD role in order to keep Powers around. There is no doubt that the Regents want a new head coach.

Basically he signed a series of one year extentions through 2020. They buyout is 2.7 million if he leaves in 2013 or 14. It goes down from there. He was never planning to stay that long to begin with.

TCU beat writer Stefan Stevenson cites a source "close to Texas executive council of regents" that says Alabama's Nick Saban will be Texas' next head coach.

The buzz has been there for some time, and this only adds to it. Saban is notorious for hoping from job to job, so it is time to take the rumors seriously. Another report, from NFL.com's Gil Brandt, stated Alabama and Saban were in contract talks to reach the $7 million level.
