Mexicans love boxing. Boxing is a sport of worldwide interest and competition. UFC is a step up above wrestling entertainment wise for folks in a slightly older age bracket. It will never surpass boxing in PPV sales or even come close. You can argue that they have 97 events a year but the only person reaping the reward is the owner; the best fighters make nowhere and I mean nowhere close to the best boxers.
UFC is officially the most boring sport ever

#110Then let's not be subjective and talk numbers. Boxing just broke its own record as the single highest grossing PPV event in history. 2.2 million buys currently and over $150 million.
The other guy in the main event will rake in over $12 million. The loser makes over 12x the undisputed UFC champ, because nobody except college aged US and Canadians really give a shit about mixed martial arts.
Boxing out-selling MMA on the highest end of the spectrum is a trend that will likely continue for a long time. What does that matter to an MMA fan? Would still rather watch MMA. Your preference (and I do mean a preference) has no more validity than anyone elses.Comment -

#111I'm not saying boxing is perfect. Boxing needs to unify the major sanctioning bodies. Casual fans have no idea who the real best champions are. There needs to be more money spent on training judges, and judges should be scrutinized for turning in suspect cards and held accountable. I don't think the Nevada State Athletic Commission does enough in that regard. I also think Olympic style or WADA drug testing should be standard in all title fights.Comment -

Its popular because we get the PPV for free and so on but i dont know a single guy who enjoys boxing unless i meet them in the gym.
90% of the people in Mexico or more actually thinks boxing is truly boring.
Canelo has been hard work to promote....they have been promoting him and praising him since 6 years ago.....whats next? again 2-3 years without any mainstream fight.
I texted a bazillion girls that week and i got the worst response ever for a party.....LOL nobody was answering because boxing is boring for everyone here.Comment -

A lot of people on sports boards and the media like to fool around and say boxing is dead, or boxing is in decline and that UFC is the way of the future. The first point continues to be shot down by the record breaking numbers boxing is putting up, and the latter, I just don't see it ever happening for the reasons I've mentioned.
I will say that I wish there were more boxing fans on SBR.Comment -

#116Thats what I'm saying....This started as me saying its a very difficult sport to judge..haha
...How does that make it a draw? Jesus. If for three consecutive rounds, fighter A landed 10 strikes, and fighter B landed 7 strikes of equal power but also got a takedown for 20 seconds at the end of each round, who won? Depends on the judge. If a judge weighs a takedown more highly than three strikes, he'll give all three rounds to fighter B. If not, he'll give all three rounds to fighter A. Is that so hard to understand?Comment -

#119Lou is a moron. Him and his buttfagpal SBRJohn don't get it as usual/
UFC is absolutely dominating and will continue to...
Why?
Because they put out a quality product with quality matches. How many quality boxing matches are accessible to the average person on a yearly basis?
Maybe 50 and there is not some universal place to watch it.
Just look at a UFC card.
2-4 are free on facebook/youtube.
3-5 are free on basic cable/fox sports 1
4 are on PayPerView
A good boxing card consists of the commentators completely ignoring the undercard for the most part, while UFC is hyping all the fighters.
Boxing promoters don't get it. You have a great product with horrible organizations trying to run it based on greed. UFC puts out a reality show that gets decent ratings, Bellator has another reality show that also gets decent ratings on Spike.
So you have two UFC reality shows which draw attention to the sport.... how many boxing shows are on tv?
UFC is not perfect and has a lot of flaws, but one thing is they do put out quality fights and know how to market their brand in an efficient way which is rare in boxing because every promoter is trying to hype his fighter to some ridiculous record to set up some "big" fight.
Lou is a moron so of course he wouldn't get it.Comment -

#120Boxing was known as a corrupt sport but this was the most blatant they have seen.
Yeah and i would say boxing took a BIG shot in Mexico because Pacman was more known and praised than Canelo. It was riding a good wave and comeback until this shit. Not to mention Pacman vs Vazquez 3 that shit killed it bad.Comment -

Showtime/CBS and Golden Boy, and even Floyd himself with his stable of fighters under his banner will continue to make exciting fights. I shouldn't include Top Rank fighters in the list since they only fight other TR fighters, but that's a separate discussion.Comment -

#130i never understood this boxing vs MMA nonsense. If u are a true fight fan u are tickled pink they are both available. There wasn't a bigger boxing fan than me years ago but i watch more MMA now. Now if a good boxing card comes on i sure as hell am not gonna boycott it because im a MMA fan. I just watched the JOnes fight again. As Dana said at the press conferance he didn't judge it and i felt the same way. After round two i decided to just sit back and enjoy it rather sitting there counting punches. This so called round four for Gus is a joke. First off he lost the first minute of that round. Probably won 2 and 3/4 of the next minutes and then almost died the last 1.30 to 1.15 seconds. Just because Gus can take a vicious kick to the head doesn't nullify the blow. Even tho Jones look the worst Gus took far more damage and sure as hell can take it. I see Wineland get nicked with a kick and he is down. Gus took some vicious kicks to the head and walked right thru them. He also took some brutal elbows. If Gus wasn't all around sore after that somebody has to test his blood. Gus didn't win round two either. Again almost taking a guys head off with a kick counts more that a couple of punches that Jones rolled his shoulder and basically got hit with nothing.

I like watching people fight and I want to know who the best fighter is so I watch mma as it is the most complete combat sport there isComment -

#140If your buddies are casual sports fans I'm sure they haven't heard much. These fighters will start being built up once the top dog retires and they'll have the benefit of the big marketing budgets and cross-country tours. Unfortunately in sports like boxing (and even MMA), simply being the best isn't a guarantee anyone knows who you are... unlike the best athletes in most other sports.
