NC State had no time outs and the clock was under a minute. you don't kick a FG in risk of it getting blocked and taken back for a TD.

coaches play the numbers stats game/situational and there.......you run the clock out and try the pick up the first down and end the ball game.

regardless if you turn the ball over. you lean on your defense that the the opposing offense isnt going to march 70 yards in 38 seconds with no time outs for a TD.
