    Why didn't Messi start today?
This is horrible management by the Barcelona staff. If he had an injury to begin with why risk him over the weekend in la liga in a meaningless league game? If he was in shape to play the weekend why not start him today? They clearly wanted to bring him the second half and of course they never had a chance from the first half to even bring him in. You either start him if from the get go or you don't risk him at all.

Without saying it publicly, they knew Champions League was O-V-E-R. He played against Bilbao to try and wrap up the league title.

Not horrible management. Do you not think if he had ANY chance to start he would have. There is absolutely no reason he wouldnt have started him if fit enough.
The plan was clearly to throw him on if they went 2-0 up and had a chance to come back.
Messi is they type of player who wants to play every minute of every game. He no doubt declared himself fit to play on Saturday and aggravated his injury.

Do you suggest the manager risks the long term health of the best player in the world on the back of a very slim chance of progressing.

why risk him on saturday if their is a chance he can aggrevate his injury? The saturday game was meaningless I would think you would save him for today.

                  Completely agree.
La Liga is as good as won, no reason to risk him on Saturday.
All I'm saying is down 4-0 its a very tall order to get through, is it worth risking turning a niggle into a long term injury over such a slim chance of progression. Personally I don't think so.

However, if they go 2-0 up in the first half and feel he has 30-45 mins in him to make an impact, he is there if needed.
But your logic is indeed right. Congrats on the winners also.

They just tested him saturday to see if he was fit enough for today.

At training you cant see that, so its logical.

because with his injury he can't play a full 90 mins, he's only good for 30-35min. He never made it into this game because it was well over after Robben's goal, so there was no reason to bring him in and risk the possibility of further aggravation.

The REAL mistake was playing him in the 1st leg. If he had rested from then until the 2nd leg, there's a good chance he would've been able to play heavy minutes in teh 2nd leg. They should've known no point in playing him AWAY if hes not fit, plus their game plan should've been pure defensive, which obv wasnt the case.

If they escaped with a 0-2 or 0-3 defeat and had a healthy Messi for 2nd leg, they would've had a good shot. Although I still think Bayern would've advanced bcuz they are the better side simply, but atleast Barca would not have gotten humiliated.
