Randall Cobb takes advantage of bizarre NFL rule
On this week’s episode of “Odd moments in NFL officiating with the Green Bay Packers” …
Randall Cobb took advantage of a little-known rule to get the Packers terrific field position at the start of the third quarter Sunday. Tennessee’s Rob Bironas kicked off to Cobb, who waited for the ball near his own end zone.
The kickoff landed shy of the Green Bay goal line and rolled nearly to a stop at about the 4. Rather than pick up the ball and return it, Cobb put one foot on the sideline and fielded it — meaning that the kickoff, technically, had landed out of bounds, which led to a penalty against the Titans and gave Green Bay possession on its own 40.
The NFL’s rule regarding that play is the same as on a fumble: If any part of a player’s body is out of bounds when he makes contact with the football, the ball is considered out of bounds as well.
To his credit, CBS color commentator Dan Dierdorf was all over the bizarre ruling and immediately began praising Cobb for his quick thinking.
Here’s the end of that play, si.com

If he had played for Detroit he would have fielded at the 4 yd with both feet in bounds and then take a knee there.

I seen that happen here a while ago and what a strange rule this is. This player really knew the rule when a lot of others would have never known it.

I always thought once a player was out of bounds he could not be first to touch the ball? but I guess with 1 foot out and 1 foot in, then thats ok?

There is no illegal touching penalty on a free kick once it has traveled 10 yards.

It's a very rare instance that you could actually pull off this play. Odds of the ball rolling to a stop that close to the sideline without going out of bounds are very slim.

Good to see TT is already studying film for the pickup football game at next year's bash. When we put Titty on kickoff returns and he effectively shrinks the field by 15 feet on both sides due to his knowledge of rules and bodily girth you guys are going to be wishing you would have put in his level of preparation...

Not to mention the fact that it needs to stop rolling before the kickoff team gets there. Pretty risky to try this with a moving ball.

That said, I find it hilarious that guys are praising Cobb for knowing the rule. The guy returns kicks for a living.....God forbid he understand the rules of his profession.
