Broncos look to regroup on road at Eagles
Broncos look to regroup on road at Eagles

Denver missed a golden opportunity to all but lock up an AFC wild card slot this past week when JaMarcus Russell and the Oakland Raiders pulled off the 20-19 upset in the Mile High City. Now the Broncos must try and get back in the win column on the road in Philadelphia. Both teams come into this one banged up, with the Eagles likely having to go without both Jeremy Maclin and Michael Vick.

You know you’ve reached the bottom when JaMarcus Russell beats you with a last-minute touchdown drive.

The Denver Broncos (8-6 SU and ATS) suffered more than just humiliation in Sunday’s 20-19 loss to the visiting Oakland Raiders (+13½). WR/KR Eddie Royal was knocked out of the game in the fourth quarter with a neck injury, adding to the list of Denver’s walking wounded, which includes these names and many others:

    RB Correll Buckhalter (ankle)
    RT Ryan Harris (toe)
    SS Renaldo Hill (ankle)
    DB Ty Law (hamstring)
    DT Marcus Thomas (shoulder)

Harris is out for the season; the status of the other four gentlemen remains in question for Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles (10-4 SU, 9-5 ATS).

Philadelphia is also down a few good men, these being the most recent of the fallen:

    QB Michael Vick (quad)
    WR Jeremy Maclin (foot)
    CB/KR Ellis Hobbs (neck)
    LB Omar Gaither (foot)

Hobbs and Gaither are gone for the year; Maclin (46 catches) has a torn plantar fascia and might be rested for the playoffs, for which the Eagles have already qualified with 10 wins. The larger concern here is Vick.

Even though he’s only on the field for a few plays here and there, those have been successful plays – three of them resulting in touchdowns. Vick suffered a contusion in last week’s 27-13 win over San Francisco (+7 road dogs) and is uncertain for Sunday’s game.

There is one other important piece of news on the Eagles injury front. RB Brian Westbrook (4.8 yards per carry) appears to be on track to be medically cleared by Tuesday, according to coach Andy Reid.

Westbrook has missed five games with a concussion; the Eagles are 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS during that stretch, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use Westbrook against a Broncos team that just allowed Oakland to rush for 241 yards. Denver went into Week 14 with the league’s No. 12-ranked rushing defense, according to Football Outsiders.

The Broncos have been all over the betting map this year. They started the year at 6-0 SU and ATS, followed that up by going 0-4 SU and ATS in November, then won a pair, and then lost a pair. So much for consistency.

Just don’t blame QB Kyle Orton; he’s cooled off after looking like John Elway in the first half of the season, but Orton has been spreading the ball around nicely and has a 92.5 passer rating over his past four games. That’s right up there with Eagles QB Donovan McNabb’s 93.6 rating on the season.

Besides being rather average at stopping the run, the Broncos have some warts on special teams. Punter Mitch Berger (38.8 net yards) has been a smart midseason upgrade over Brett Kern (34.5 net yards), but he’s still in the bottom half of the league in terms of raw distance (43.4 gross yards).

Matt Prater is a perfect 13-of-13 from inside the 30, but 12-of-16 from between 30 and 50 yards. Again, nothing special here. Now Denver might have to make do without Royal, who has returned both a kick-off and a punt to the end zone this year.

The early betting odds were firmly on Philadelphia’s side as 7-point favorites. Game time is 4:15 p.m. Eastern (on CBS), so jetlag won’t be as much of a problem for Denver as it would for a typical 1:00 p.m. start. That hasn’t stopped the Eagles from getting almost 90 percent support from the marketplace, according to the consensus reports.

The 'over' is pulling in almost unanimous support on the total of 41 ½ points; Philly has the 'over' at 9-5 this year, and Denver has gone 'over' in each of its past three games after starting the season at 2-9.

Although rain might be coming in on the weekend, we should see mostly clear skies by Sunday and temperatures hovering just above freezing. Nothing these two offenses can’t handle.

Denver can match up with them but I am not sure about standing in front of Philly right now. They are playing too well.

phi losing vick is a good thing although he was starting to make a impact in goalline situations the other times he was being used last week was disruptive to the offense. phi also are going to have westbrook back. only shot den has in this gm is to run it right down philly throat they can not i repeat can not have orten in obvious passing situations against this team he will be embarrassed. ive really just started looking at the card and havnt made any decisions as of yet but right now gun to my head id say lay the points with the eagles

The big news locally around this game is the return of Brian Dawkins. Many people were hurt the Eagles didn't do enough to keep him. He is one of the most popular players this franchise has had.

Vick is almost a non-factor. Maybe 4 good plays all year.

Denver's clear weakness in all their losses is, their inability to stop the run. Philly not will not beat them if they can not run, because this pass defense for the most part is stout. If they Broncos offense can somehow score TDs with the many redzone opportunities they had, they would of easily had two more wins.

                          Denver ML is the play.

Philly clinched a playoff spot and the only game that matters to them is next week against Dallas for the division. A win here does nothing for them and Denver has 6 or 7 teams breathing down their neck for a wild card and has lost two in a row, plus the last one being a horrible loss to the Raiders.

as an avid denver fan, this is exactly the situation where they have excelled

look back at the giants game, i think the matchups are similar, denver plays better vs passing teams

Serious? Philly still has something to play for:
1- possible 2nd seed if the Vikings keep losing
2- Dallas can still win the division...

If I had to bet this I would take the Eagles. Then again, both these teams couldn't beat the Raiders so maybe the under is a better play.

This is one of the few situations where I love talking the chalk. It's a painful spread, no doubt - and dogs in a big spot getting 7+ is pretty nice. I'm really dissatisfied with Denver's ability to put points on the board in big games (the Raiders game was a big game - it's a division matchup). They were hot early and have cooled considerably. Their offense has really lost it's way, it seems.

It's hard for a team down in the dumps to bounce back. I'm not big on the bounce back traveling coasts after a tough loss. I havn't read enough about the Broncos in their local media for a final decision, as their mentality will be the biggest factor..

Philly has been rolling and playing very good football. They also have a serious playmaker in Desean - that's Denver's weakness when they blitz. As good as Champ Bailey is, he can be beaten in the right situation for a big play. Right now I think Jackson is the difference - and if he has another big game, Denver will lose by 3 TDs. This is at first glance, however.

Not sure about this game but supporting Denver on the road against a quality club like Philly is a scary proposition. Beating Giants and KC in KC recently not impressive.

Broncos will choke away the playoffs like they did last year

look back at the giants game, i think the matchups are similar, denver plays better vs passing teams
look back at the giants gm? are you serious? 1st off to compare g-men to the eagles is absurd at this point...2nd nyg was playing terrible football at the time and honestly as of late in big spots philly is running the ball much better than nyg..another thing are you seriously comparing nyg shit seconday 2 the eagles secondary 1 of the best in the business. god help orten if den gets in obvious pass situations wouldnt be surprised to see a couple picks and probly 1 getting brought back to the house. phi run defense is certainly a weak spot and this is den only chance to punish them with the ground gm but to think philly wont get there's is crazy sure den can slow them down but bottom line is they have to score and i dont see a lot of that coming for them in this 1...1 more thing isnt this gm in philly while the nyg gm was in den on turkey day just dont see how you make this connection but to each is own
