Another Turner FG, 16-0. One key rule to acknowledge:

*NFL/AFL merger was not fully complete until 1970.

In order to play this game, the two leagues had to agree to two rule compromises:
    1) The ball was brown leather. Not the multi-color ball that the AFL used.
    2) No two-point conversion. 2pt try was being used by the AFL, but not the NFL.

Ergo, 8+8 could not eclipse the 16-point lead. Was going to take three Colt scores.

It took Shula til the 4th qtr to yank Morrall in place of Johnny Unitas. Unitas must have been pretty banged up. Otherwise, why wait so long?

I know that Unitas had lobbied to start this game. But it made no sense, given the great season Morrall had en route to the MVP award.

Namath in SB3 = best Field General performance ever?

After a Colt fumble early in the 3rd qtr, Jets controlled the ball for 12 of the 15 minutes in the quarter. Namath was so precise on the short passing game.

Two Turner Field Goals. Jets 13-0 after three quarters.

Super Bowl 3 sticks out for so many reasons. I would boil it down to better execution at two positions:

    *Quarterback

    *Kicker

Read about the Jet gameplan. Namath knew that it was going to be tough to run against the Colt flank with Bubba Smith and Mike Curtis. If possible, Namath wanted to scheme away from that side.

Dick Schaap told a story about covering Super Bowl 3:

*Morning of the game, Schaap got up early and ate breakfast. He was walking the street and with his head down he was reviewing his game notes. He hears "Hey, Dick."

It breaks his concentration. Dick looks up and says "Hi, Joe."

Schaap stops in his tracks. Hey, that's Joe Namath. Namath had a girl in his arm and was just coming in from the previous night out.

Super Bowl 3: Jets vs Colts

Has any player gotten more mileage out of one game (than Namath)?

Max McGee replaced starting WR Boyd Dowler after Dowler was injured.
...If you believe the legend, McGee was out drinking the night before. McGee didn't expect to play, he was hung over.

On the first TD catch, McGee showed unusual dexterity to reach back and catch it. Thanks to the Demon Run?
