tips on how to make a profit sports betting?

So i am 18. I have about 400 dollars to start with. I will have another 1500 in the next month or so but i would really like to get started now.

I was thinking i would sign up for 5dimes. Should i also sign up for a site that will give me picks like bettingresource?

Or just bet on the moneyline and go with the favored team?

Any articles or advice would be appreciated.

These are pretty good tips from GunShard(a member here at SBR)

    1. Money management. Bet less than 5% of your total current bankroll per bet. Be discipline.
    2. Be a strategic gambler by picking your spots and wait for the right opportunity.
Never be an emotional compulsive gambler by betting because it's your favorite team or for the action or bet against a team because you hate a certain player.
    3. Stay emotionless all the time. Bet like a robot. There's no place for emotions in this profession. Be unbiased.
    4. Do your research by watching game footage, trends and statistics should be used on division rivals only.
Don't judge a team based on what they did in their previous game.
    5. Never bet on heavily juiced/vig lines. Like a line at -1000 for example.
    6. Never bet on heavily valued lines. Like a terrible team at 100 to 1 odds to win championship.
    7. Parlays should be no longer than 2 teams, the bigger the parlay is, the greater the House Edge. Research and Secure your first pick before moving on to your second pick.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89HtJmQgjww
    8. Teasers should never pass through the zero.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RP3P9OJvukQ
    9. Teams with home field/court advantage tend to win games. Sportsbooks know this and favorites the home team.
    "Whoever is first in the field and awaits the coming of the enemy, will be fresh for the fight;
whoever is second in the field and has to hasten to battle will arrive exhausted." -Sun Tzu, the Art of War
    10. Never bet on double digit road favorites. You will lose in the long run.
    11. Never bet on preseason games on any sport. Predicting a 2nd string and 3rd string team is stupid because of the lack of game footage on mostly unknown players.
    12. If you are extremely compulsive, arrogant, drunk and biased. The best advice is to "Don't Gamble".
    13. Learn from your mistakes. Most gamblers don't learn from their mistakes. That's why I made these gambling rules.

if you can't afford to lose the $400 dont start gambling. Trust me when I say this every person in your shoes who made their first deposit has always lost that first deposit.

Here's the responsible thing to do if you want to make your money last. Wait another week and get your hands on the 1500 as well so you have a larger bankroll. at a 1,900 bankroll start with flat betting 3% of your bankroll per game. This way the money will last you quite a while and you won't go bust in the first week. Secondly bet your own games don't pay for a service or tail some free picks. These picks will hover around 50% and will lose you money. Bet sports you watch and know. Never randomly bet for just action. For example I don't follow tennis and everytime I bet it I lose money. So it would make no sense for me to continue betting this sport if I don't have the knowledge. Don't bet for action, meaning just because a game is televised and you will be watching it and therefore you should have action on it. It doesn't work that way.

to summarize bet small % of your roll, don't bet for action and be selective with the games you bet. You can't expect to be successful if your betting 1/2 the games on the board on an NFL Sunday. Let me know if you got any questions.

A few more useful tips to succeed at betting on sports:

    • Betting and drinking are tons of fun, don't be bashful about making bets while your sauced, you'll also have better intuitions about games
    • When someone says that a certain pick is a stone cold lock, take advantage of the situation and bet the house! You don't want to pass up these opportunities.
    • If there's no games to bet on and you're bored, a lot of sites have casinos to pass the time until you get some action
    • If you're in the middle of a losing streak start betting bigger since after a while you're bound to get hot again. This will help regain your losses much quicker.
    • 10+ team parlays are a great way to get some big wins real quick, bet $20 to win $1000 ? Sign me up!
    • Don't worry about keeping track of your wagers, this is time better spent on finding hot tips about games to bet on from expert handicappers

    Best of luck!

Find value, bet appropriate stake (for most this means <2% bankroll), don't tilt, don't get lazy (ie have a method and don't skimp when tired). Simple to say, hard to do, but that's the structure of what you need to do to make money longterm.

You need to have "The Three Steels"

Nerves of Steel..Don't go tilt! Don't lose your self-control.
Heart of Steel..No emotions! Don't bet with your feelings, emotions. Bet like a robot.

    and 3rd one is..

    BALLS OF STEEL!

never chase losses. if you are down $100 from a loss, don't bet more on the next game to make up the loss. bet consistent amounts. do not bet every game either. as mentioned, determine what games you feel sure about.

I was going to start a new thread, but I basically have the same question as iChief (op). So I'm hoping more people have some answers to this question. Anyway I get the idea of basic money management, but how do you find "value" in certain situations? Can you give actual examples where you have found value in a certain pick and why?
How about the game simulation sites where the run the game 10,000 times through their computer and then come up with a spread based on that? And before you say "don't just blindly follow the sim" can you explain in detail why not? I mean I know there are other factors such as motivation involved, but I want to know exactly, specifically how to handicap games and how to make a profit. Considering that you are always fighting the juice, is it even possible to make a profit considering that the oddsmaker has the same tools at his disposal that the handicapper has?

value, consistent lot size, being cool about it not being so attached to it,

a trick that works is to, as soon as you deposit money with a sportsbook, consider it LOST, like it's gone forever

then bet with discipline, this way you will not take losses so hard

i stay away from bonuses because the strings they come with can lead you into taking bad bets

it's good enough to be able to bet your own money on the internet

Just pick value bets. What is value bet? If line/odds you pick is better then Pinnacle, then it's a value bet. Let's say Germany is +130 at Pinnacle, if you can find it at +160 in another book, then it's a value bet.

Bet single. Don't chase your losses. Don't bet 20 unit on 1 game and 800 unit on another.

Honest advice if you're trying to make money at this is don't bet.

Come up with whatever criteria you're going to use to make your wagers, look at available lines and make a spreadsheet of the bets you would've made. Do this for a few months until you have a few hundred fake bets in. If you're winning, go ahead and start betting for real. If not, thank me for the money you saved.

Best advice I would give is to back and lay on betfair and make money that way.

All the pro's trade on betfair eventually because they get limited or banned at traditional bookmakers.

For example, England were at 9 dollars to win in the recent test match against India.

I backed England @ 9.00 because in my opinion their odds were going to shorten as the match progressed, even though I didn't actually think they would win.

England came into 4.50 but I traded out at 5.50 using betfair and made guaranteed profit.

My advice would be to paper trade for a few years, actually understand probability, and how bookies make their money and set their odds.

Welcome to the exciting and fun betting world.

Always keep in mind the most important rule for gambling, don't wager more than what you are willing to lose.

Learn from your losses (because they will certainly happen) and soak up as much knowledge on here as possible. Lots of great threads with lots of experienced people here.

And if you're new to wagering on baseball (as I am), know that a lot of those games are crapshoots no matter how good the pitchers are. Can't tell you how many times last few weeks I've lost an under or a ML b/c of the bullpen or closer who comes in at the end only to penetrate it all up. It's maddening.

If you've lost, do not raise your stake in order to win back. Better make a pause or lower stakes. Otherwise, you can lose all your money.

It is difficult to teach an 18 year old how to handicap games when experience is such a strong mental factor. The idea being if you have seen the situation before you will be more able to play that situation (or pass). The best advice for noob is to NOT start with 400 and max 5% per bankroll with a 2% average. EXPECT bad losses and don't use any profit for stupid things in the middle of the season.

Here is a noob question, if anyone could please give me an idea. Let's say that a handicapper predicts:

    Slight edge

    NBA
    Indiana +8.5

If I wanted to bet on this tip, should I be willing to bet on a handicap equal to the one he gave? Or should I look for something above that? Or below??

Bet on Indiana at +8.5 or better. If Indiana goes to +8 or less, the value of the pick might be gone.

Don't judge a team based on what they did in their previous game.

stats for division rivals only? i heavily look at stats and recent performance, they are both indicators of future performance. looking at efficiency/rate stats, strength of schedule, team metrics can give you a quick overview of teams strengths and weaknesses or when a team is over or underperforming. there are 2,430 mlb games, that's a lot of game footage

Some good and valid info listed here. I'd like to add, after 40+ years of sports betting and horse racing wagering, do not bet when your sick, depressed, moody, unhappy, mad, miserable, angry, injured, frustrated, lost, broke, drunk, high, manic or crazed. To make a good choice, you must be thinking clearly while keeping an open mind when considering which side to wager on.........

I'd should also mention be realistic with your expectations....... with the vig, you probably need to pick between 52%-54% winners just to break even. Very good gamblers can (and will) hit about 58%-60% straight winners in a season, the best can get to 65% or slightly higher ocassionally. Just be happy to make a profit each week, whether it's a $1 or $10,000.
