MURRAY, Ky. -- The mother of Murray State reserve guard Picasso Simmons was killed in a car crash Monday, on the eve of the team's departure for the ncaa tournament.

Freeda Simmons died in Nashville, Tenn., Murray State spokesman Dave Winder said. Her son is planning to go to the Racers' first-round game Thursday against Vanderbilt in San Jose, Calif.

Simmons' mother, who ran track at Murray in the early 1980s, was pleased the team made the tournament, Winder said. The bracket was announced Sunday.

"His mom was real, real happy that he was getting a chance to go," Winder said. "He just feels that she would want him to go, and he wants to honor her in that way."

Picasso Simmons, a walk-on junior guard from Gallatin, Tenn., saw limited time in seven games for the Racers, who went 30-4 and won the Ohio Valley Conference tournament.

Simmons' sister, Galileo, has also competed in track and field for Murray State, and their father played football there in the early '80s, Winder said.

"Our basketball team is a family," Winder said. "We had all the jubilation of yesterday, and something like this puts it into perspective."

definetely helps their chances but I'm still not sure it will be enough, Murray St. is a great TEAM with extra emphasis on how well they play as a team, but so is Vandy who comes with a good to great coach and smart players, Vandy should have some matchup advantages and I expect them to be smart enough to take full advantage of those, in my opinion Murray St. was one of the best "upset" teams but they got paired against a team who would be on of the harder teams to upset

If Ogilvy isnt on Vandy loses and Murray States big men arnt as big as him but they will still be able to keep him in control. Murray State can give the ball to 10 players on that team and they will do something productive with it.

Vandy needs Ogilvy and McBeal to have phenomonal games.

Wow, that is terrible. Very sad. I wouldn't hold too much stock in how losing someone effects people. Everyone is effected differently. Some will use it as motivation, some will be distracted and unfocused, and some will be able to block it out during the game. Don't try to get into these kids heads.

I have watched Vandy a few times this year and to say the least, I was not impressed... they flat out suck and seem to be one of those teams that the media expects to be a powerhouse so they make them a paper one, but on the court they dont look like one, it seems like they are all about ogilvy and threes, if the other team has an answer to those two things they win... In my opinion the comittee seemed to pair this one up to almost insure there would be a double digit seed upset in round one, so it can complete the legacy of the mystique of the tourney... and vegas seemed to be right on top of that by setting the low spread so they didnt get killed by offering a typical 4 v 13 seed pointspread... compare the other 4 v 13 spreads to this one... that should tell you a lot about this game

Definitely a tragedy, but hard to say this will have a tangible impact on this game. Vandy is a tough team - I think people overlook them with upset fever on their minds

Look at both there sched. And compare the two. Wow MS didn't beat a team in the tourny and play a week a$$ sched. On the other hand Vandy is tested with some tourny teams and won them. This game is to easy. Vandy rolls here emotions will be high but you got to be high to take MS in this game.

Some guys are talking like Murray State winning would be a monumental upset. The current spread on this game is +3! This is not a typical 4 vs. 13 matchup. Also, the SEC sucks this year, so I have no problem playing the best team from a weaker conference against them.

I agree that this does effect everyone differently. I think some players with a heavy heart may be too emotionally charged and end up trying to do to much. I wouldnt look too much into this information, as it could help or do nothing at all.
