Thanks a lot for the posts guys! I appreciated both of them, and they lifted me up just a little bit.

Louisville, I think that was really valuable information. I did not know many services stop picking college hoops this late in to conference play. I also hadn't been properly considering the fact that every team has adapted to the teams within their conference quite well. I will probably do some research to try and identify some trends that occur as a result of this. I speculate taking dogs +12 or more (or some similar thresh hold) becomes profitable if the two teams know how each other play. I also would like to look in to the influence of coaches in this situation.

Mjolly thanks for the pick me up! It helped to be reminded of the days when I was hitting 57% or more. it also helps to know I still have some viewers. I know I lost a ton when I stopped writing in a blog style, and I stopped posting winners.

On a side note, I am going to continue betting air for awhile guys. The bets are based off real odds/real lines, but a tangible bet is never actually made. I feel soft for doing this, but I get the feeling it is a wise choice in the long run. I bet lots of the guys who can now turn a profit look back on the early days and laugh at how they threw their money away!

I love Towson -6. They outrank JMU in almost every in-game statistic. Towson plays good defensive ball, and compete for every single rebound. Towson is 14-8 SU and 7-6-1 ATS, while JMU is 8-14 SU and 7-11 ATS. Also, I have a flawless record when my numbers suggest to bet against JMU (6-0)...Actually that kinda makes me nervous haha. I'm reminded of being at the Casino, seeing the roulette wheel churn out 8 consecutive blacks, and tripping out on whether it would be red next or not.

Northern Illinois I am not quite as sure in. Northern Illinois is 2-1 ATS when my numbers make them a play. Unfortunately, I am 1-2 when betting against Miami Ohio, so there is no edge to be gained from that perspective. Northern Illinois also plays good defensive ball, and are great competitors on the board (especially offensively). I am convinced this is going to be a defensive battle, and I give the edge to Northern Illinois in that respect. Neither team has a high powered offense, but I give the offensive edge to Miami Ohio.

Drake-3.5 came up as a play today...Of the times I have officially played them, they have gone 2-1. On the times they have came up as a play but I decided against it they are 1-3. I don't trust playing Drake and Drexel, so I am not playing them tonight

Day 47: results

2-0 yesterday, would have been 2-1 if I played Drake. Drake actually got absolutely pounded, so I am glad I blacklisted them right from the get-go. After those two wins yesterday, the thread is at exactly .500. This is a small victory that leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, but I will take it. I have a 115 dollar hole to dig myself out of. A lot of my wins came while using 5 dollar units, and a lot of my losses came while using 10 dollar units. The 2-12 day is responsible for 107 dollars of that hole.

Day 48: road to recovery

Saint Bonaventure vs. Richmond: DON'T take Richmond -1

The numbers are 0-1 when they bet against the bonnies, 1-0 when they pick Richmond, but 1-3 when betting against richmond. Perhaps the numbers underestimate Richmond. I have watched more bonaventure games than I have bet on, and they often seem underrated compared to the numbers. Both teams rely on taking it to the hoop to get points, but both teams know how to stack their big guys in dribble lanes. This may cause shooting capabilities to be the deciding factor, in which case Bonaventure gets the edge. Apparently, Derrick Williams and Cedrick Lindsay are not playing tonight. These two guys are the only seniors on Richmond. Don't go with the numbers on this one, if your playing this take Bona


Saint Louis vs. Saint Josephs: Take Saint Louis -1


San Diego state vs. Boise State: Take San Diego state +2

Boise state has a bit of an edge over San Diego in offense, but San Diego state has the third best defense in the country. The last time these two teams met, San Diego was at home, and they won by 3 points (the spread was SDSU -6). SDSU is 10-7 ATS while Boise is 5-11 ATS. SDSU has a proven track record on the road, while Boise state often fails to cover spreads at home. My only concern is that Boise state has a good shooting night, and takes advantage of perimeter shots.


Charleston vs. Delaware: Take Delaware -5

My numbers have gone 2-1 while picking Delaware. I am 2-0 on bets involving Charleston, which suggests the numbers may be accurate involving Charleston. Delaware has a high powered offence, but Charleston has one hell of a defense. I should be giving the edge to Charleston, since they will make points in the paint extremely difficult, but Charleston is awful at generating points. Overall, Charleston is 8-12 ATS, while Delaware is 11-5. Delaware has dealt with some hard d before, and done just fine. My main concern is that Delaware is unable to generate points because Charleston is stacking the paint with big guys, and that Charleston greatly out rebounds Delaware


Duquesne vs. George Washington: Take George Washington -9.5

My numbers have gone 2-2 when GW is a play, and 1-0 when betting against Duquesne. Both teams are terrific against the spread. Duquesne is maybe a little better ATS. GW excels at home, Duquesne excels on the road. These teams have similar offensive outputs, but Duquesne has sloppy D. GW has the 63rd ranked D in the nation. This bet loses of George Washington is sloppy with the turnovers, or Duquesne is on fire for 3.


Minnesota vs. Purdue: DON'T take Minnesota +3

I am 1-2 betting on Minnesota, but 2-0 when betting against Minnesota. I am 0-1 when betting against Purdue. I read through this match up and do not see too much of an edge. I don't believe I am going to play it.


Boston College vs. Virginia: Virginia -12.5

My numbers are 4-3 when betting against BC, and 0-1 when betting against Virginia. Boston College can generate more points in a game than Virginia, but Virginia far out stripes Boston College on defense. Boston College will have to shoot threes, and will use their high free throw percentage to earn points from the charity stripe, but I don't think it will be enough. I'm just watching line movement to get the right spread on this one.



Lots of other games with less potential value came up as plays but I haven't even looked in to them, write-ups are tiring, but I thought I would try them out. I am gonna start keeping track of the results of these unused plays to better know how the numbers perform

Day 48: results

I feel pretty good about the results of Day 48. My conceptions of how the games would play out were fairly accurate considering it was one of my first real attempts at dissecting games past the numbers. Of the 16 games that came up as plays according to the numbers, I chose to play 6 of them, while tracking the other 10 games just for my knowledge of how my non-plays do.

I went 4-2 in the games I did play, and 6-9-1 in the non-plays. These results make me think that perhaps I didn't do an effective job weeding out plays from non-plays, since my non-plays did just as well as my plays. As anticipated at this time of year, the lines were generally pretty tight. Of the ones that didn't finish close to the pre-game line (i.e unanticipated blowouts), I put all of the losers in to non-plays. Missouri state, Florida state, Portland, and Umass all would have been comparatively easy covers. I should look in to why this may have happened.

Virginia was up 19 at the half, but slowly leaked points off their lead at the end, finishing up by 10 (2.5 points shy of cover). Delaware couldn't effectively run their offense for more than half the game. At the end, they made a huge push, and ended up winning by three. While up by 3 with less than 10 seconds left, a Delaware player missed two consecutive free throws. Had these gone in, the bet would have been a push. SDSU had an insane come back at the end, largely thanks to Xavier Thames. I had no business winning that bet, but I was long overdue for a bit of luck to be thrown my way for once. It was accurate three point shooting that was so lethal to Boise state defense. They did an acceptable job guarding the paint

I am starting to realize how important Defense is to covering spreads. High powered offence doesn't mean a blowout unless the other team has crummy defense. I am going to continue reading books about the game of basketball. I believe this is a pretty solid help for handicapping.

I am also keeping records of games that come up as plays that I don't play. If I had been doing this all along, I could use it as some kind of an index on how well my numbers perform for different teams.

I could keep rambling for awhile right now. I feel like analyzing my results more so I can learn more about each team, but I won't bore you guys with that (if anyone does in fact read all the gibberish I write...seriously post in this thread!).

Hey guys, I'm a new member here. I don't mean to intrude on a great thread, but I took the above quote from the previous post by GK and just wanted to make a quick comment.
The Super Bowl XLVIII game brought this point home to me. It was all "defence beats offence, so total goes under" prior to the game, and the TL of 48 had some pretty strong downward pressure pre-game because of it. Defence won out all right, but the solid defence completely opened the game up for Seattle, and the game blew out. The Over turned out to be a great play against the square's Under (the Over bettors would have been Bronco bettors).
This is something I'm seeing a lot of in big games. Defence wins and the totals go over. I realise this is an over-generalisation, but it's something that is worth keeping in mind for those games where it seems a straight Defence v Offence is forcing the Totals Line down.

Day 54 results

Well, for once I was right to love my picks and bet more on them. Georgia tech was a pick I made on day 54, but the game didn't happen until day 55. I am including it in to day 54 for convenience. The blind numbers have been hitting pretty well too, which gives a little bit of hope to my pipe dream. Going 4-0 on 2 unit plays pulled me most of the way out of the hole I dug, which is a nice relief. Even the nba was positive, going 2-1.
