Well the possessions were extremely low too which made it an easy try. I think 1st half possessions were 58, so even if they shot red hot again - chances were that it would end up below that number. Unfortunately the SD-Loyola game really slowed pace wise. Possessions well under the expected rate. Would be nice to grab an OT helper after that Texas BS.Comment -

Shooting didn't help and was expected to drop off, but possessions/pace was what really screwed this one up. 2nd Half + OT only yielded around 70 possessions. Based on the 1st half pace, the 2nd half itself should have had at least that #.Comment -
Someone might be able to help me here, I've been working on calculating the amount of possessions in halves and games. Take for example stats from the Pittsburgh - Seton Hall game, 2PTs were 30-88, 3PT were 10/32, FT 32/49, OR 20, TO 27 and Total Points were 102.
Now using the formula on the first page (and seen elsewhere on the net), the total possessions in the game are 150.275 and points/possession was around 0.68. (88+32) - 20 +0.475*49 + 27= 150.275
The problem I find is that in doing this calculation it seems that I'm constantly overestimating the amount of possessions (thus lowering points/pos value) compared to average pace rating given by websites like kenpom.com and teamrankings.com.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I just quickly checked Pittsburgh's possessions per game using the formula throughout their season, they are listed as having 62-63 possessions per game on the websites above, but I rarely calculated one to land below 70.Comment -
The three point shots are already including in the overall FGAs and FGMs in the box scores. So the game you are looking at has 88 total FGs. 20 O-REB. 27 TO. 49 FTAs. 118 possessions or so.Comment -
