    NBA Coaching Need-to-Know
Looking in at coaches in the NBA, we see two opposing trends in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. Mike D'antoni of the New York Knicks is enjoying the turnaround of his players’ performance – while Avery Johnson is suffering the contrary.
SBR.tv takes a glance at both.

well.. that dont mean they aren't successful. avery knows what he signed up for.. and his job is take nets from a crappy team to a playoff team. not gonna happen in 1 year...

d'antoni has a lot more to work with so success .. yes is good, but also not a surprise.. anytime u add amare to a team, they are a good playoff team.

Avery is a better coach than D'Antoni... if Avery coached the Knicks they would actually have a chance in the playoffs because they would play defense.

Didn't Avery Johnson send one of his top player to the D-League. Could be why they are losing a lot as they are missing a certain role player on their team. That is if that player is back and they still losing they just simply suck compare to the other teams.

Well obviously the team agreed with his decision since they then traded that player for a draft pick and Vujacic.

The Nets have basically no talent outside of three players. It will take a few seasons for Johnson to build the team he wants.

D'antoni is a better coach to begin with. All we've seen Avery Johnson do is maintain success shared by his predecessors in Dallas. No professional team should start off losing in the manner the Nets did last year, it's winless Lionesque. Yeah, I linked Matt Millen and the 09-10 nets.

D'antoni also has much better pieces, and a team concept he's cultivated from day one. Of course the perception that he went all-in on getting Bronbron obscures his philosophy, an otherwise clearly defined one from his days in Phoenix. What makes him a coach that we will all remember is the fact that he HAS learned from his days in Phoenix. Amar'e and D'antoni's relationship in Phoenix used to be portrayed frequently as one rife with tension. He's become better with his players without becoming a 'player's coach'. They are a fast paced team and will give up high totals, but he instills defense in a much more effective way (or at least the improvements by their tweeners and the emergence of Fields), and has the team believing.

The only thing I think Avery has his team believing is that he's taller than Lawrence Frank.

Look at it like it was a bet (for all of you real cappers out there); when things seem too good to be true it's because they are. Avery and Byron Scott both won coach of the year and were chilling commentating for at least a year each for a reason.

Lol at everyone thinking dantoni is a good coach let alone better then aj.

Avery has done a great job with the nets, the teams problem is talent. Fact thet they are not the worst in the league is coy worthy.

Yeah what the hell do I know?

                            1. Did anyone think the Knicks would be relevant sans Lebron James?

                            2. Who was the first coach to have regular season success consistently this generation playing uptempo ball? People used to freak, it was like watching the Greatest Show on Turf Rams when Warner first exploded.

                            3. Who can honestly say they thought Steve Nash would have been better without Dirk Nowitzki?

                            4. In Phoenix, he consistently had an ever changing ensemble besides Amar'e (see number 5) Barbosa, and Nash. Over the years he lost (not limited to): Joe Johnson (yea. ouch, team decided they needed insurance for Amar'e during microfracture time and got Diaw), and key players to injuries/bs playoff suspensions when he needed them the most.

                            5. Who can honestly say they thought Amar'e would be better without one of the two point guards ever to win consecutive MVPs?

                            6. WHAT HAS AVERY JOHNSON ACTUALLY DONE HIMSELF AS A COACH THAT WASN'T DONE FOR HIM? I NEVER SAID HIS TEAM WAS PLAYOFF MATERIAL, but he has proven nothing as a head coach but the ability to maintain a deeply grounded foundation around dirk and co in dallas.

                            7. WHO THOUGHT THE KNICKS WOULD BE ON THE FRINGE OF COMPETING FOR HOMECOURT FIRST ROUND IN THE PLAYOFFS?

                            8. Avery Johnson gets to put together a huge prospect in Derrick Favors. D'antoni has/is maximizing the potential of guys that weren't exactly in the green room of the NBA Draft in Fields, Douglas..He's proving that he really can make Gallinari a scoring threat (something I think alot of people assumed was never gonna happen), turning Wilson Chandler into a name teams have to scout...etc etc.

Lastly, you tell me if a guy: that hasn't been involved in the NBA beyond minute tenures in the early 2000s comes, takes a Western head coaching position during the years of the Leastern Conference (approximately 5 years since short Denver tenure), and in his second season improves his team win total by 33 isn't a good coach.

                              1. The knicks are not relevant bud, we're 2 months into the season. Have fun with the Christmas games but remind how relevant they are when the play-offs come around when ESPN is feeding you some more BS about what great free agents are gonna come to NY.
                              2. The the uptempo style has gotten him how many championships? Finals?
                              3. What about Steve Nash?
                              4. Great coaches dont need excuses.
                              5. What about Amare?
                              6. Ehh, Avery Johnson took a perennial underachieving play-off loser, built around a soft Euro big and offense into the NBA finals.
                              7. Yawn.
                              8. Yawn.
