Melbourne Tigers vs New Zealand Breakers
Where and When: Wednesday 30 September, State Netball and Hockey Centre, 7.30pm (local)
Pre-Season Tigers: 7-3
Breakers: 4-1
Season So Far Breakers: 1-0
Past Three Head-to Head New Zealand Breakers 97-103 Melbourne Tigers, Semi-Finals Game 2, 2009
Melbourne Tigers 117-99 New Zealand Breakers, Semi-Finals Game 1, 2009
Melbourne Tigers 96-89 New Zealand Breakers, Round 19, 2009
Season Series First match
Current Standings Breakers: 1st
Tigers: N/A
New Zealand has wasted little time in showing the rest of the competition why it is considered this season's favourite for the title.
After a tight start against Cairns last Thursday in the season opener at the North Shore Events Centre, the Breakers powered away to a convincing 95-75 win.
New Zealand's first-up victory was powered by a three-point clinic put on by superstar duo Kirk Penney and CJ Bruton who combined to drain an amazing 16-of-20 from beyond the perimeter.
And there's little doubt that Andrej Lemanis' will be hungry for revenge after they were sent out of last season's playoffs in straight-sets by Melbourne at the semi-final stage.
Although the Tigers have won their past four games against the Breakers, New Zealand will be viewing Wednesday night's match as its best opportunity to beat Al Westover's men for the first time in 11 months.
While Melbourne has shown impressive pre-season form, winning seven of 10 matches, it heads into the semi-final re-match in far from ideal shape.
It has lost its influential captain Chris Anstey until the end of the year due to hip surgery, Mark Worthington continues to battle a foot injury and David Barlow has flown the coop and joined Spanish outfit CAI Zaragoza.
Add to this the loss of talismanic import Ebi Ere and the exit of fan favourite Dave Thomas, and it becomes apparent the Tigers have their work cut out for them against the strongest team in the competition.
But where one door closes, another one invariably opens and Melbourne's pre-season woes mean that forgotten man Sam Mackinnon has been thrust into the spotlight as one of the Tigers most important players.
It's a great story considering the 2007 NBL MVP's career was at the crossroads last season after two separate instances of blood clots occurring in his lungs.
But Melbourne will need more than Mackinnon's impact to overwhelm the powerhouse from across the Tasman and while Daniel Johnson, Ben Knight and Tim Lang will do their best to cover Anstey's loss, his absence against such a strong Breakers team could prove decisive.
Tip: Breakers by 6

Watched a game and a half in full this year, sadly it is still at a pretty low standard. The defense is really lacking and barely better than WNBA standard in my opinion.

Haha Domestic, I'd be willing to bet that some of the chicks on the WNBA could out play a NBL team. I'm talking about the Deanna Nolan's, Candace Parker's (willing to go out on a limb and say Candace would kill Shelden Williams 1-on-1, he is sh*t and no idea why Celtics picked him up), Diana Taurasi's, etc who have the shooting form and ball handling skills that NBL lacks.
I guess it's unfair to compare USA bball to Aussie hoops because it's no where near as big as it is in the States which is a shame. Too much rugby in Australia, not enough basketball.

Haha yeah, I definitely agree Diana Taurasi could dominate an NBL match.

i used to remember in early 90's that aussie basketball was 2nd to nba. man we had some fantastic teams. in melbourne there was melb tigers, north melbourne giants and east side spectres. they used to pack out glasshouse , rod laver arena.the downfall they didnt promote it, big stars didnt come out anymore and it went to summer comp-big mistake. now its just a third world joke. i still think it has potential but needs refining and more cash injection. ytd 5-1

Yeah could really use a big Australian Celebrity with a love for the game throwing their wallet behind it. The current comp is a dead end with no Sydney team.

Current Standings
Taipans 2nd
Blaze 5th
Cairns will be playing its third game in a row at home and will be full of confidence after beating Adelaide in Round 1 before recording a convincing 89-71 victory against Perth on Saturday.
Rich Melzer top scored with 23 points, pulled down seven rebounds and was named the NBL's Player of the Week for Round 2 while Dusty Rychart was another solid contributor with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Last weekend's game showed the Taipans have plenty of potential at both ends of the court. They scored quickly in the first quarter and sank five three pointers. They did concede 31 points in that opening period but then restricted their opposition to just 40 more points for the rest of the game.
Cairns should take an unchanged line-up into the clash whereas the Gold Coast look set to make a few changes to the side that beat the Wollongong Hawks 84-78 on Friday.
Despite the breakthrough result, the Blaze gave Michael Joiner (who top scored with 18 points) the flick and brought Erron Maxey into the mix.
It's hoped Maxey, a 100kg, 198cm forward, will add some rebound and blocking grunt along with some leadership to the group.
Meanwhile the Blaze's other major contributors against the Hawks, Ayinde Ubaka (ankle) and James Harvey (hip) will be nursing injuries if they play on Wednesday. Anthony Petrie has already been ruled out.
The Blaze have had an extra day to recover from their Round 2 encounter but their line-up maybe too unsettled to beat a confident Taipans team at home. Sportal Tip: Taipans by 11
