Greyhound racing over?Casinos or cruelty to animals perception the cause?
Back in the 80's I was a greyhound adopter and lover,a race fan-bettor,racer owner and even track employee for a time.Actually,I will be an adopter all my life.I was just entering my 20's in the 80's and was pretty green and naive as to how people could be so heartless and cruel and such. This was the era of greyhound racing where there was virtually no attempt for trainersor the tracks to find homes for washed up racers. The industry thrived at this time because there was no casino competition or outcry from people that the dogs were being killed when they washed out. Then comes the 90's and 2000's and the tracks cleaned up their act and make wonderful attempts to place ex racers in homes and the animal rights groups are constantly trying to get racing banned. The tracks spend tons of money on helping the ex racers where as in the 80's they spent nothing and that's when they were making lots of dough. It's so politically incorrect these days to say that you went to the greyhound races to have a good time and bet on the dogs. Then greyhound racing was never known to bring out the classiest segment of society out to the races and now that slots are all over, the lower class element in society will play them over betting on the dogs.Grant you that many greyhound tracks have slots and that's what pays for alot of the racing purses.

I look at alot of racing results-payout tables and you would have never seen such eratic payouts as you see today because of small handles. In the 80's huge exotic bets just went along with a somewhat longshot or two finishing in the money. Now you will get dogs that pay $46 to win and $20 to place and the trifecta will pay $50.A couple people can bet the odds down on stupid $2 hunch bets. You no longer can be a serious bettor or have fun thinking you might make serious money betting on greyhounds.

i be the greyhounds from time to time, and find that the only way to make any money is betting exactas and trifecta's, the WPS pools are so small, sometimes less than $1000 in the entire pool.

true. the small pools eliminated the big bettors from playing. maybe it will survive in florida but probably not.

Casinos are competition for the gambling dollar. There effect is much more dramatic than the other issue.

I don't see a bright future for greyhound racing going forward. I came to greyhound racing when my local horse track failed many years ago and they turned it into a greyhound track. While it is true I like the horses much better, I made an adjustment and began to do OK with the "short ponies". Unfortunately, with the dwindling pools and horrendous take outs it seriously became too much work and too little pay.
Couple all of that with the questionable clients that showed up at my local track and I reluctantly quit the track. Not too long ago I visited one of the FL tracks I used to frequent while on vacation. I had not been there in a couple of years and I was shocked at how the facility had gone down.

With all of the competition that exists for the wagering dollar, I think greyhound racing is dying on the vine, moral issues aside.

Greyhound racing won't survive too much longer!

Casinos(especially slots)are just too formidable.Any states that currently have horse or dog racing but not any casinos or VLT's at their tracks are in DEEP SHIT!Turfway Park in Northern KY just CANCELLED the entire KY Cup Day of Champions card(nice prep races for those readying their horses for the Breeders Cup)for their upcoming fall meet & left only ONE stake race for the Fall meet!OH & KY desperately need video lottery terminals at their horse racing tracks IMMEDIATELY.OH appears to be ready to finally install VLT's within the next year. That spoiled little rich white kid(Dan Gilbert)supposedly anonymously financed a lobbying group to delay Ohio's installation of 2500 VLT's at each of seven racetracks this year. That allowed his two new casinos more time to steal slots customers away from the racetracks.OH horsemen are at a HUGE disadvantage since they can't offer decent purses to attract quality horses
