This is how I see the Belmont. This crop has been a subpar group of 3 year olds. I have said it before, only Maximum Security and Omaha Beach are the only two that has cracked the 100 Beyer Mark. Sir Winston is the last one to join that group. This is the last leg of the Triple Crown and we only have three horses that has done that. Some people say that 98, 99 or 100 are the same, but to me, it is way different. For some reason, it is very difficult to get that triple digit Beyer. And only Sir Winston is the only one now in the Belmont. I am hoping that he will improve from last start. I think it is a positive that Rosario chose him over Everfast. I know that he has yet to win on dirt; given his pedigree, I don't see any issues with dirt. I think he has as good a chance as anyone.
As to the pace of this race, most people think that Belmont needs running style of tactical speed in order to win. While in most cases, I do agree but I still think it all depends on how each individual race is run. This year, on paper, looks like there is only one front runner, 1- Joevia. Pedigree wise, I think he can get the 1 1/2, but it is very difficult to go wire to wire on the Belmont. Best I see is 4th or 5th place. As to the rest of these so call tactical speed runners, this is the problem that I see. Majority of the horses are the "tactical speed" type, it is going to be very crowded in the middle and inadvertently, the outside horses would want to come in because everyone wants to save ground. Then the pace will be quicker than people would think. That is why I like the position of Sir Winston, he will sit behind these wall of horses in the third group and on the outside of only maybe a couple of horses. He will save ground and should be prime to make his move turning for home and in the stretch. He would be stuck in traffic when horses tire in the stretch. With that said, that's why I don't like Spinoff's chances. I would rather take Bourbon War over Spinoff and Intrepid Heart (similar running style). Bourban War is my second pick because I believe Smith will take him back and make that one run in the stretch. His last race with blinkers on didn't help him at all, now he is going back to blinkers off which I think will help him relax. Smith is always dangerous in these big races. I pick him second only because he has yet to break that triple Beyer figure. But to me, they both have a good chance. Boubon War is out of Tapit and we all know about his influences in the Belmont.
Anyways, that's how I envision this race; will it run the way that I have pictured it?? Who knows?? But with ML odds of 12-1 for both Sir Winston and Bourbon War; I will take my chances. I hope that Sir Winston will not go off lower than 8-1 (I think he might come down from the ML cause I read quite a few handicappers picking him as well).
I was never a fan of Tacitus; I used to respect Bill Mott but after the Derby, just sticks in my head..... And I used to like Prat, and also after the Derby, I lost a lot interest in him.... wonder if that's why he doesn't have many mounts this weekend?? LOL. I will take WOW over Tacitus anytime, any day.
Of course, I can be all wrong about this, but that's the fun part about horse handicapping. GL on whoever you choose. Are you playing HT today? I am in the Belmont one.Comment -
OK Mr. G&T. Thx for the take. Have a tough choice to make between Bourbon War and Spinoff. Just think Spinoff may get first run off the leaders turning for home, but the scenario you describe concerns me. Will wait to see what STR says if he looks it over, and post later which direction I am going. Playing this game and an early Belmont R 1-6 contest.
