Found an interesting interview on Matt Bernier, DRF handicapper. He was interviewed by Horse Racing Nation a few years back. Here is his take on how he handicaps a race. Just thought it was interesting and it’s similar to how I go about handicapping.
So far there has not been a lot of the how, the Horseplayers handicap, so what is you process or emphasis when you go through the past performances to formulate your bets?
I’m big on race shape. I would like to be able to visualize before a race happens, what I think is most likely to happen. Let’s just say you go through a race ten times, who’s going to get to the lead the majority of time, barring a bad break or some racing issue and go from there. I like to go about pace – if you get a race loaded with front end speed then obviously it’s more likely to set up for someone from behind or vice-versa. I like to envision how the race will be run. I’ve heard a lot of people recently say they don’t think pace matters hardly at all - that it’s all kind a class thing. To each their own, but that’s what makes the game fun, that there’s not one tried and true method to do it.Comment -
Yeah agree with Matt's view. You Mr. G&T are pretty good at getting an idea how the race will be run. I depend more on the pace numbers that BRIS provides. And yeah the science of horse handicapping is a real subjective exercise. Many different ways to approach the game. THx.Comment -
That’s exactly what I think about horse racing. Handicapping is very subjective in a lot of ways and there are so many ways of approaching it. I don’t know if you follow DRF or not; I like to watch their video on Race of the Day, Out of the Gate and Matt Bernier show. Don’t care much about Mike Watchmaker though. Yeah I usually do not check out DRF. Prefer Bloodhorse, and Paulick report. I think DRF has some good material, but to me they are all about making that money. I must get 2 or 3 emails a day from them trying to sell me something. I know the DRF is your main out for PP's,, but I like the BRIS with the pace numbers.
