I went to my first NASCAR race at Daytona in 1977. I'd been there about 10 years earlier and watched a few hours of practice with my dad while on a family vacation.
I took a voluntary layoff from work in late Jan. of '77 and decided to drive to Florida for a week or two, which eventually became a month. Spent every day at the track during Speed Week watching practices and races.
Cale Yarborough won the 500. Benny Parsons was the only other driver on the lead lap and finished second.
Left right after the race and tried to drive the entire 1600-trip back home in one shot in my '74 Dodge Challenger. Made it to my buddy's place in Des Moines, Iowa, about 24 hours later (not as many 4-lane roads then) before finally stopping for some sleep.

well, i'll be doin' daytona in july as scheduled; only big cashes in june and a decision to play the main event would trump catching the "whoever's sponsoring it" 400 (still the firecracker 400 in my mind) in July
