#107DETROIT -- David Price has reached a $19.75 million, one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers, avoiding arbitration.
The Tigers confirmed one-year contracts Friday with Price, right-hander Alfredo Simon and outfielder J.D. Martinez, avoiding arbitration with all three. Right-handed reliever Al Alburquerque is Detroit's only player left in arbitration.
Price's contract is the largest one-year deal for a player who filed for arbitration, topping Max Scherzer's $15,525,000 agreement with the Tigers last year.
Detroit acquired Price in a deadline deal in July, and the move paid dividends when the left-hander held Minnesota scoreless in a division-clinching victory on the final day of the regular season. Detroit won the AL Central for a fourth consecutive year.Comment -

#127I can't believe teams are still interested in this guy:
The Yankees, Blue Jays and Padres are among six teams considering signing veteran starting pitcher Johan Santana, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. Santana made his first start in the Venezuelan wnter league last Tuesday and is expected to start again Thursday.
Santana remains on the comeback trail after suffering a torn Achilles tendon in June. He has not pitched in the majors since 2012 with the Mets. Santana, who signed with the Orioles last season, missed the 2011 and 2013 seasons due to shoulder surgery.Comment -

#132SAN FRANCISCO -- Ryan Vogelsong's return to the Giants remains possible, though the right-hander has been linked to numerous other clubs and San Francisco already has gathered a full contingent of starting pitchers.
When contacted recently, Vogelsong's agent, Dave Meier, said that he has maintained talks with the Giants on his client's behalf, even while the free agent has been mentioned as a potential fit for rotation openings in Houston, Arizona and Philadelphia. It was reported that Vogelsong flew to Houston earlier this week to meet with Astros manager A.J. Hinch.
Vogelsong conceivably could provide the Giants depth, as well as much-needed stability. Despite finishing 8-13 with a 4.00 ERA last season, he made 32 starts, exceeded among the Giants only by Madison Bumgarner's 33. Since joining the rotation in 2011, Vogelsong has compiled a 39-35 record with a 3.74 ERA. San Francisco emerged victorious in all seven of his postseason starts in 2012 and '14.
The Giants' current projected rotation consists of Bumgarner, Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, Jake Peavy and Tim Hudson. But Hudson (right ankle) and Cain (right elbow, right ankle) are coming off surgeries, though both are expected to be ready for the regular season. Lincecum is attempting to regain his form after ending last season in the bullpen. Peavy recorded a 6.19 ERA in four postseason starts. Swingman Yusmeiro Petit never has started for a full season in the Major Leagues.
Even Bumgarner, the World Series hero, must be watched carefully after working 270 innings, including a record 52 2/3 during the pressure-packed postseason in 2014.
It was widely assumed that Vogelsong would head elsewhere after Peavy signed a two-year deal on Dec. 23. However, about two weeks afterward, it was learned that Hudson underwent surgery, reviving the Giants' interest in Vogelsong.Comment -

Johan Santana's comeback attempt has hit a snag after the two-time AL Cy Young Award winner experienced shoulder soreness following a Venezuelan Winter League outing.
[+] EnlargeElsa/Getty ImagesJohan Santana, 35, has not pitched in the major leagues since 2012 with the Mets.
Santana, in his first action since tearing an Achilles tendon last June, suffered the injury after retiring six straight batters on 17 pitches over two scoreless innings for the Magallanes Navigators on Jan. 14.
According to a report by LVBP.com, Santana had an MRI which revealed no structural damage to the shoulder.
Santana, who is 139-78 in 12 major league seasons, has made just 21 big league appearances in the last four seasons due to a pair of shoulder operations and the foot injury.
He tore his left Achilles tendon last June 6 while pitching in extended spring training with the Baltimore Orioles. Santana was struck by a line drive and stumbled while in pursuit of the ball.
Santana, who turns 36 in March, hopes to sign with a big league organization. He won the Cy Young Award for Minnesota in 2004 and 2006.
He has not pitched in the major leagues since 2012 with the New York Mets. Santana signed a $137.5 million, six-year contract with New York before the 2008 season and had surgery Sept. 14, 2010, to repair tears in the front and bottom of his left shoulder's anterior capsule.
He returned to the major leagues on April 5, 2012, and pitched the first no-hitter in Mets history that June 1 against St. Louis, throwing a career-high 134 pitches. He then went 3-7 with an 8.27 ERA and cut his season short because of lower back inflammation.
Santana experienced weakness in his pitching shoulder during the following spring training and had surgery on April 2, 2013, for a tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder.Comment -

Santana experienced weakness in his pitching shoulder during the following spring training and had surgery on April 2, 2013, for a tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder.
Johan is definitely banged up. Unfortunately, it may be time to hang 'em up...Comment -

#138Santana had surgery Sept. 14, 2010, to repair tears in the front and bottom of his left shoulder's anterior capsule. Since this date his career is over, although he keeps trying comebacks.
I used to think highly of him until that point, now he is poison.Comment -
