East Carolina has lost a ton of seniors and early departures over the off season, as well as one of the nations top, up and coming coaches, Skip Holtz. Ruffin Mcneil is the new man in town, you may recall him as Texas Tech's interim head coach during Texas Techs BCS bowl game last year; other than that he used to play football with the Pirates before he coached the last 10 years for Texas Tech at various positions, last being defensive coordinator. Mcneil has brought on several other coaches from the former Texas Tech staff as well to help. Mcneil plans to completely alter the Pirates to a west coast, pass first, second, third style offense. The Pirates have the manpower and talent on offense to mold accordingly into the west coast offense that Mcneil is striving for, but do they have the defense to still win games? The Pirates defense is still a burning question mark in my mind. ECU plans on running a blitz happy defense that has the players running wild all over the field, coupled with many substitutions throughout the game in order to keep fresh bodies playing in order to support the unorthodox, physically demanding style of defense. I'm not to sure how this is going to work out but I am sure that the offense is going to work out brilliantly. What some may not realize is the so called "4th string" running back from last year was only so low in depth due to off the field, personal problems with law enforcement. Brandon Jackson would of easily been 1st string RB over the past two years if he would of stayed out of trouble, now he's back and he's going to be damn good. Top two receivers from last year are returning, including number 17, Dawayne Harris, an NFL prospect who is going to be awesome once again. At QB, there will either be Sophomore Rio Johnson, or the more likely and sensible choice, Boston College transfer Domonique Davis, who was forced to leave the Eagles two years ago due to academic issues.
As for game one with Tulsa, Tulsa is coming of a bad year and this year will not be nearly as bad, that is for certain. ECU is, on the other hand, coming off back to back conference championships and this year will not be as good, that is for certain. Tulsa has always been a high scoring offense, they were 2nd in overall NCAAF scoring just last year, even though they couldn't win games. They will be able to put points on the board once again this year, but so will the Pirates. This will be a HIGH scoring affair when the Pirates meet Tulsa on Sunday and also one that I think the Pirates will keep close, therefore I like the OVER 60 and Pirates with the points, +8.5. As I said, there are questions to be answered about the Pirates defense, as there are questions with every team, INCLUDING TULSA, in week 1, but I'm liking Pirates with the +8.5 points. I like the Pirates because this game is extremely important for the Pirates to win in order to get any kind of bowl season started considering it is a conference game after all, and the fact they play Virginia Tech, UNC, Navy, and NC State for their 4 non-conference games. Also liking the Pirates because their offense can hang with Tulsa's offense, defense is the only shaky point for week ones play but I'm banking on the offense to pick up any potential slack for the Pirates in a high scoring, close game.
