#9It all depends on what type of capper you are. If you are a fnadamental capper, then Athlon and Lindy's are good. If you are a Technical capper, Mark Lawrences Playbookis a must. Steele tries to combine the two and tries to appeal to the situational capper. Just remember to use the information and disregard the rankings and picks in these mags. Mags like Steele and Larwences are tout mags, and look to steal headlines by making some off the wall picks and rankings. Use them for the information, not the opinion.Comment -

#11I've bought Steele's the past 3 years and think it is well worth it. Purchased Athlon and Lindy's for the 1st time a few weeks ago. I had been trying to find out which mags give unit rankings for each team relative to other conference opponents; these are important for me in my early-season handicapping. Athlon has these but was disappointed that Lindy's does not--they only give their top national units. Haven't started reading Athlon in depth yet but it appears to go deeper than Lindy's as far as team prospects are concerned. Lindy's might have more info on recruiting. I agree that it depends on what type of 'capper you are. I get Lawrence's Playbook, too, and use the technical 'capping data to the extent I think it deserves in the overall scheme of things.Comment -

I have every Steele College pub going back to 1994 (a bunch of Athelons, Lindys, and Marc Lawrences also) and I'm in Steel's pub every year for data base work, and I don't even buy the others anymore.
But why quibble? These things are cheap for the money; take $25 or so and buy them all and compare for yourself.Comment -

#21To me Blue Ribbon is the most valuable. Steele's is full of great info, but his picks are coin flips. Read it and take the info to make your own plays.Comment -

#22Got to admit, I love the technical end of handicapping. That said, I completely agree that all three should be considered.Like a point ,counter point debate, when their is no real struggle within those angles, plays feel rock solid.Comment -

#30Have you seen Blue Ribbon's picks? Take about coin flips. USC winning the Pac 10 is excusable because like all the rags, they were printed before the sanctions came down, but Oregonat #5 is totally absurd. So are many of their picks. I guarantee you that OU has a much better chance of winning the NC (as Steele predicts) than Oregon has of finishing 5th in the Pac 10.Comment -
