Just saw a defensive holding penality that was a 10 yard penalty, but not a auto 1st(it was 2nd and 12)...is it only in NFL that its an auto 1st?
When is defensive holding ever not a automatic first down?

#4Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe def holding is 10 yds, pass int. is auto 1st. I don't remember the game but this question came up between two broadcasters. this is the answer one gave to the other.Comment -

#5this isn't correct. i don't know all the rules about defensive holding, but the most frequent infraction i see is 5 yards and an automatic first down. it may depend on where on the field the foul takes place as to how it's enforced (i.e. how many yards and whether or not it's a 1st). that's my educated guess.Comment -

#6Just saw on the TCU/TT game, a def holding "automatic 1st down". (it was 1/2 dis to goal, so I don't know the normal yds, penalized.)Foul was on the 2.Comment
