Counting/Stratagy?

Probably a dumb question. I have no math skills but have been reading up on counting anyways. Can you be profitable by just guesstimating the card flow? So if there is a flow of small cards you bet big next hand and vice versa?
Also, is hitting 12 on dealer 2-3 really a good play?
