Pretty interested in the UFC Debut of Manel Kape. He has a high ceiling if he can figure out his defensive grappling. Pantoja is a difficult first UFC test.

Reem has a shot in this one as the dog I think at plus odds. Maybe???

Reems final run at the title I think he shows. If he loses he retires.

Can Clay Guida lay and pray with MJ and win by decision maybe? Wrestling favors Guida for sure in that one you'd think.

MJ by KO or Guida by Decision in that one is my best guess.

UFC giving Mike Rodriguez a tomato can in Marquez after he got screwed in his last fight with Ed Hermann. I hate the odds, but already put a few units on him @ -250 and probably add a little more on KO/TKO prop.

I'm probably staying away, but wasn't Overeem a K-1 world kickboxing champ before the roids and weight gain? Plus he's training with Blaydes, unless he's lost too much with age there should be a lot of value in him as a dog.

Overeem arrogant and boring as ever in his interview. Makes sense why he's the least popular of the top K1 dutch guys.

Jairzinho wanted to smash him for a reason. Overeem didn't understand why he took it so personal at the time. Well I understand now.

135 lbs.: Joselyne Edwards vs. Karol Rosa

A seven-fight win streak carried Joselyne Edwards (10-2) to an LFA title fight, where she lost a narrow split decision to future UFC competitor Sarah Alpar. Following a lengthy layoff and get-well knockout, she stepped up on short notice last month to defeat ** Yanan by split decision in the Octagon.
She steps in for Nicco Montano, who withdrew because of lingering concussion symptoms, on less than two weeks’ notice.
Karol Rosa (13-3) and Lara Procopio combined to land 336 significant strikes in the pair’s Octagon debut, which Parana Vale Tudo product won via split decision. Four separate attempts to fight Julia Avila followed, and when those all fell through, she instead claimed a comfortable victory over countrywoman Vanessa Melo.
She is the shorter of the two by three inches and faces a similar reach disadvantage.
Edwards definitely exceeded expectations against **, whom I’d tabbed to spoil the former’s Octagon debut. Despite that success, it’s hard to see her having a pleasant sophomore experience. Rosa looks like the sharper puncher of the two, has some sneaky wrestling in her arsenal, and pushes a pace I’m not convinced “La Pantera” can match. Even with Edwards’ striking acumen, she lacks means to keep Rosa from simply burying her in volume.
Rosa’s just too busy and has too many tools for Edwards to overcome. In the end, the Brazilian out-works Edwards on the feet and potentially sneaks in a takedown or two to seal a wide decision.
                                  Prediction: Rosa via unanimous decision

125 lbs.: Molly McCann vs. Lara Procopio

Molly McCann (10-3) — the former Cage Warriors Flyweight champion — put a UFC debut loss to Gillian Robertson behind her by winning her next three. Her efforts made her a sizeable favorite against Taila Santos, who used consistent takedowns to hand “Meatball” her second Octagon defeat.
She has scored four professional victories and one amateur victory by knockout.
Lara Procopio (6-1) defeated Mariana Morais to claim the Shooto Brasil Bantamweight title in 2018, then claimed the Flyweight belt as well with a decision over Sidy Rocha. Her Octagon debut pitted her against Karol Rosa, who battled her way to an entertaining split decision victory.
This will be her first appearance in 17 months.
It’s hard to get an exact bead on McCann’s potential, as her two UFC losses came against genuine contenders and her three wins came over opponents with losing Octagon records. Still, her efforts paint a clear enough picture for me to confidently pick Procopio. The Brazilian is by far the better grappler, and judging by McCann’s losses, “Meatball’s” wrestling improvements don’t hold up when the competition improves.
Even if McCann does manage to shut down Procopio’s takedown attack, that’s no guarantee of success. Indeed, Procopio kept up with the very capable and visibly larger Rosa on the feet, landing more than 11 strikes per minute in the process. If McCann has a stand up edge, it’s not significant enough to make up for the deficit on the ground. In short, Procopio racks up top control and holds her own in the stand up to claim a decision.
                                  Prediction: Procopio via unanimous decision

145 lbs.: Seung Woo Choi vs. Youssef Zalal

Seung Woo Choi (8-3) received no matchmaking favors in his first two Octagon bouts, facing and falling to contenders Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker. His third appearance went a bit more smoothly, battering The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) veteran Suman Mokhtarian for a wide decision in Dec. 2019.
Five of his professional victories, including three of his last four, have come by way of knockout.
Youssef Zalal (10-3) burst onto UFC’s scene in 2020 with three consecutive wins in the span of six months, including an upset of Austin Lingo in his promotional debut. He couldn’t quite make it four straight against top prospect Ilia Topuria, losing a decision to the Georgian newcomer in Oct. 2020.
He replaces Collin Anglin, who himself replaced Steven Peterson, on just over a week’s notice.
Choi, like McCann above, has only faced very good or very poor opposition in the Octagon. Unfortunately for him, Zalal definitely falls into the former category, and “The Morroccan Devil” is a nightmare style match up for him besides. Not only is Zalal durable and crafty enough to avoid any kill shots on the feet (as he did against Lingo), but his wrestling is more than sufficient to put Choi on his back whenever things get hairy.
While both the Peterson and Anglin match ups were winnable for Choi, this one simply isn’t. Good footwork, careful potshots and regular takedowns carry Zalal back into the UFC win column.
                                  Prediction: Zalal via unanimous decision

135 lbs.: Ode Osbourne vs. Denys Bondar

Ode Osbourne (8-3) — who’d racked up three consecutive first-round finish, defied moderate odds to tap Armando Villareal on “Contender Series” and secure a UFC contract in the process. An Octagon debut against Brian Kelleher proved too ambitions, as “Boom” forced “The Jamaican Sensation” to tap to a guillotine less than three minutes in.
He fights for the first time since Jan. 2020.
Denys Bondar (14-2) has dispatched eight opponents, all inside the distance, since last tasting defeat in 2016. Five of those have come inside the first round, including his most recent effort in Aug. 2020.
The 14 finishes for “Psycho” are split 9/5 between submissions and knockouts.
I’m more torn on this one than I thought I’d be. That’s because I was extremely high on Osbourne going into the Kelleher fight, but when I recently re-watched his fights, he lost some of his luster. While he’s certainly far better than Bondar on the feet, his ability to actually keep it there against a suffocating grappler like Bondar remains in question, and his historical issues with submission defense bode ill against a finisher of the Ukrainian’s caliber.
That said, Bondar hasn’t faced anyone nearly as good as Osbourne, so it wouldn’t be terribly surprising to see him overwhelmed by Osbourne’s striking before he ever really got out of first gear. Considering how well-equipped Bondar is to exploit Osbourne’s key weakness, however, expect “Psycho” to overpower him on the mat and eventually force the tap.
                                  Prediction: Bondar via second-round submission

155 lbs.: Michael Johnson vs. Clay Guida

Reeling from losses in five of his previous seven fights, Michael Johnson (19-6) looked on track to finally right the ship after a dominant first round against Thiago Moises in May 2020. Instead, the Brazilian caught Johnson in an ankle lock, forcing the ninth tap of “The Menace’s” career.
He’ll enjoy a three-inch height advantage and 3.5 inches of reach.
Back in 2017, Clay Guida (35-20) put together his first multi-fight win streak since 2011 with consecutive victories over Erik Koch and Joe Lauzon. He has since dropped three of four bouts, the sole win coming over a badly faded B.J. Penn in 2019.
He has submitted 15 professional opponents and knocked out another five.
Losing to monsters like Khabib, Justin Gaethje and Josh Emmett is nothing to be ashamed of, but Johnson’s inability to execute in winning match ups against Darren Elkins, Stevie Ray and the aforementioned Moises make it impossible to put any faith in him. While he’s got Guida hilariously out-gunned on the feet, “The Menace” is still a dead fish off of his back, and I’m not convinced he can stay focused long enough to keep Guida from putting him there.
Johnson has all the tools to win this, but he’s had all the tools to win a lot of his fights, and look at where he is now. I suspect Guida gets battered early before capitalizing on Johnson’s inevitable meltdown for a late finish.
Prediction: Guida via third round submission

205 lbs.: Mike Rodriguez vs. Danilo Marques

A dominant “Contender Series” victory for Mike Rodriguez (11-5) has given way to an inconsistent 2-3 (1 NC) UFC run. His most recent defeat was absolutely loaded with controversy, however; he seemingly knocked out Ed Herman with a knee to the body that the referee incorrectly deemed a low blow, allowing “Short Fuse” to recover and ultimately land a comeback kimura (highlights).
He has never gone the distance in victory, knocking out nine.
Danilo Marques (10-2) — who came up just short in his sole LFA appearance — ended a 31-month layoff when he stepped in to face Khadis Ibragimov last year. In an ugly affair, he used consistent takedowns and back control to defeat the Sambo veteran by unanimous decision.
He faces a five-inch reach disadvantage despite standing two inches taller than “Slo Mike.”
If Rodriguez has any future in the Octagon, he has to beat Marques convincingly. The Brazilian has almost nothing to offer besides middling wrestling and ground game, being a non-entity on the feet, but Rodriguez can’t seem to stop a takedown to save his life. If Rodriguez has failed to address the flaws that let Devin Clark, Ed Herman and even striking specialist John Allan plant him on his back with impunity, he could very well lose this.
I’ll admit that this could be optimism talking, as I enjoy watching Rodriguez ply his craft on the feet, but I think he’s at least good enough to destroy someone on Marques’ subterranean level. In the end, he crushes the Brazilian with heavy strikes in the first round.
                                  Prediction: Rodriguez via unanimous decision

135 lbs.: Martin Day vs. Timur Valiev

Though unsuccessful against Jaime Alvarez on “Contender Series,” Martin Day (16-4) punched his ticket to the Octagon with three consecutive wins, including a knockout of then-unbeaten Brady Huang. He’s yet to taste victory in the Octagon, however, dropping a controversial decision to Liu Pingyuan in his debut and suffering stoppage losses to Davey Grant and Anderson dos Santos in 2020.
He replaces Julio Arce on a week’s notice.
The impressive runs in Professional Fighters League (PFL) and on the European scene made Timur Valiev (16-2) a massive favorite in his Octagon debut against late replacement Trevin Jones, and a dominant first round seemed to prove the bookies right. Jones wound up scoring a comeback knockout, handing “Lucky” his first definitive loss since his professional debut, but soon saw his win overturned after a failed drug test.
Valiev gives up nearly four inches of reach to “The Spartan.”
While Valiev did get caught against Jones, he remains an immensely talented fighter with the skills to make a run at contention. He’s definitely more than capable of handling Day, boasting the kickboxing craft to shut down Day’s long-range offense and the wrestling to exploit the Hawaiian’s lacking ground game.
Unless the Jones loss significantly compromised Valiev’s confidence or his chin, he’s way too much for Day. In the end, he leans on rapid-fire boxing and far superior wrestling to sweep the cards.
                                  Prediction: Valiev via unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Justin Jaynes vs. Devonte Smith

Justin Jaynes (16-6) enjoyed about as perfect an Octagon debut as possible, demolishing Frank Camacho in just 41 seconds to earn “Performance of the Night.” Subsequent efforts proved less successful, as “Guitar Hero” suffered stoppage losses to Gavin Tucker and Gabriel Benitez.
He steps in for Alex da Silva on less than one week’s notice.
Devonte Smith (10-2) dispatched his “Contender Series” foe and first three Octagon opponents in less than one round apiece, improving his career knockout total to nine and securing a post-fight bonus along the way. “King Kage” entered his subsequent clash with Khama Worthy as more than a -1000 favorite in places, only to fall victim to one of the biggest numerical upsets in UFC history (watch it).
He’ll have two inches of height and almost nine inches of reach on Jaynes.
Smith was in serious trouble against da Silva, who boasted enough striking chops to hold his own on the feet and looked exponentially superior on the ground. He figures to have less of an issue with Jaynes, a far more one-dimensional striker facing a ridiculous reach disadvantage. Smith’s hands are both sharper and heavier, and Jaynes’ tendency to swing for the fences should leave him vulnerable to Smith’s calf kicks as well.
If the Worthy loss damaged Smith’s chin or exposed heretofore-unknown fragility, a Jaynes knockout isn’t out of the question. Jaynes is coming off some rough losses of his own, however, and faces such a disadvantageous stylistic match up that it’s hard to see him winning even in a best-case scenario. In short, Smith wipes him out in the first round.
                                  Prediction: Smith by first-round knockout

Women’s Bantamweight: Marion Reneau vs. Macy Chiasson

Best Win for Reneau? Jessica Andrade For Chiasson? Pannie Kianzad
Current Streak: Reneau has lost three straight, whereas Chiasson returned to the win column last time out.
X-Factor: Is “Belizean Bruiser” close to retirement at 43 years of age?
How these two match up: Veteran vs. prospect matchmaking at 135 pounds.
Reneau has been locked in the cage with many of the best female Bantamweights to ever strap on UFC gloves, and despite my retirement speculation above, she appears athletic as ever despite the recent losses. She’s a heavy-handed boxer with strong jiu-jitsu, though her historic issue lies in forcing those advantages.
Chiasson is a former Featherweight and considerable physical force at 135 pounds. She has the power in her hands and raw aggression to simply blitz opponents when they cannot stand up to her strength, but she’s also demonstrated the technique to win the full 15 minutes on the feet and mat.
This is likely to be a close fight. If Reneau could be trusted to pursue takedowns and actively implement her jiu-jitsu advantage, that close fight might even favor her. However, between the two, Chiasson better understands her own fighting style, even with half as many pro fights.
Chiasson likes to bully opponents. She muscles them around in the clinch, scores takedowns when they’re easily available, and generally just plays a physical game. Given Reneau’s largely reactive approach to fighting, it seems unlikely that her counter punches are enough to scare off the larger woman, and Chiasson’s clinch control time could prove valuable in deciding the judges’ scorecards as well.
                                    Prediction: Chiasson via decision

Flyweight: Alexandre Pantoja vs. Manel Kape

Best Win for Pantoja? Brandon Moreno For Kape? Kai Asakura
Current Streak: Pantoja lost his most recent bout, while Kape has won three straight.
X-Factor: Potential UFC jitters for Kape.
How these two match up: This might end up the best fight on the card.
Pantoja is one of the awesome, high-level jiu-jitsu black belts who is equally likely to end up in a “Fight of the Night”-type brawl as he is chase the submission. His two most recent victories actually come via knockout, but Pantoja can really do it all.
It’s hard to watch Kape’s RIZIN fights and not look forward to his UFC career. The 27-year-old “Prodigio” is an excellent athlete who is comfortable everywhere, but he largely prefers to time his opponent with power punches.
All of the former RIZIN champion’s victories in the promotion came via stoppage.
There is a loss on Kape’s record that’s worrying: Ulka Sasaki. The Japanese grappler is certainly talented, but considering Pantoja strangled him inside a round, it’s hard not to be at least a bit concerned about the potential for Pantoja to ground Kape.
Fortunately, some time has passed since that defeat, and Kape has only grown stronger in the interim. As it is, Kape’s speed and counters should prove an excellent antidote to Pantoja’s aggression and combinations, and without Sasaki’s lanky build, Pantoja may have more difficult baiting his foe into takedowns.
There will be some exciting moments for each man, but Kape lands the more powerful shots en route to a decision nod.
                                    Prediction: Kape via decision

Bantamweight: Cody Stamann vs. Askar Askar

Best Win for Stamann? Bryan Caraway For Askar? Kevin Wirth
Current Streak: Stamann’s win streak came to an end last time out, whereas Askar debuts on short-notice following a single win
X-Factor: It’s a major step up in competition for the newcomer
How these two match up: An established contender faces off with a highly talented prospect.
As is demanded of elite Bantamweights, Stamann can do it all. I don’t know if he actually has a Karate background of some kind or just fights like it, but Stamann manages distance nicely with side kicks and shifting combinations. He also tends to time his powerful double leg shot very well, which makes for a very effective controlling style.
Gone are the days when UFC newcomers have gigantic weaknesses or lapses. Askar Askar — not to be confused with UFC Flyweight Askar Askarov — brings an excellent 11-1 record to the cage with him, and though his general preference involves takedowns and suffocating top control, the Palestinian born athlete can strike too.
Stamann is one hell of a debut opponent. Askar is talented, but Stamann really can handle himself in all areas, and he’s such a strong wrestler that it’s hard to see “Ak-47” being able to impose a grappling-heavy game plan. Between the two, it’s more likely that Stamann is the one scoring takedowns, and even if he doesn’t, Stamann is simply the smoother, craftier man at range.
Askar is here to stay, but his first UFC bout is unlikely to go well.
                                    Prediction: Stamann via decision

Lightweight: Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Beneil Dariush

Best Win for Ferreira? Rustam Khabilov For Dariush? Michael Johnson
Current Streak: Ferreira has won six straight bouts, while Dariush has won five in a row!
X-Factor: Who improved more since their 2014 meeting?
How these two match up: Man oh man, the Lightweight division is awesome.
The first time these two met, neither man was particularly refined on the feet. Instead, the two jiu-jitsu aces battled on the mat, where Dariush’s wrestling and top control proved sufficient in smothering the Brazilian for a decision nod.
Seven years later, Ferreira has become one of the division’s better pressure fighters. He marches opponents down with combinations and uses that cage positioning to set up takedowns, at which point his ever-excellent grappling game comes into play.
Meanwhile, Dariush’s kickboxing has come a tremendously long way under the tutelage of Rafael Cordeiro and Kings MMA. Everything that comes from the Southpaw’s left side packs major power: round kicks to all targets, knees up the middle, and overhands, all capable of ending the night in an instant.
Though ranked as No. 10 and No. 13, respectively, this is one of those crazy Lightweight bouts where either man could give any top fiver trouble.
So, enough singing praises, who wins? It is statistically a terrible move to pick the older man in a rematch that he lost opposite a younger fighter, yet I do favor Ferreira. Dariush has thrived in chaos during his recent run, but it’s a risky style of fighting, Ferreira, alternatively, appears completely dialed into what makes a fighter consistently successful, and his grinding style may trouble Dariush’s historically average gas tank.
Prediction: Carlos Diego Ferreira via decision

Kape looks nasty in his Rizin fights and it appears the UFC wants him to a big thing. I wish I could find odds for "Fight of the Night" I would definitely put money on this one - should be one hulluva good fight

When you turn SBR PRO which will never happen and when you have a real say on this forum then I will.

That's a combination of three links and when I cap the fights I sometimes like to go back to re-read the write ups and it's all right there on SBR and easy for me.
