Phillips agrees to minor league deal with Blue Jays
January 3, 2006
TORONTO (AP) -- Jason Phillips and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed Tuesday to a minor league contract, and the catcher was invited to spring training.
Phillips hit .239 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, then became a free agent when the Dodgers failed to offer a contract by the Dec. 20 deadline. He spent his first four major league seasons with the New York Mets and is a career .254 hitter.
If added to the 40-man roster, Phillips would get a contract paying him $550,000 in the majors and $90,000 in the minors. He also could earn $50,000 in performance bonuses based on games.
