We’ll be keeping this short and sweet, because there really isn’t much history to cover here. Wyoming moved incredibly quickly once legislation was in place, going operational mere months after the successful bill was signed into law.
Here’s a look at Wyoming’s sports betting history:
2020: Bill falls just short
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in May 2018, Wyoming Representative Tom Walters and Senator Odgen Driskill sponsored Bill H 225. It was introduced to the house in February 2020 but ultimately fell just short, with 27 in favor and 32 opposed.
The voting result on H 225, which would have seen sports betting revenue taxed at a 16 percent rate, gave legislators optimism that a modified version would be successful.
2021: Sports betting bill approved
Another year, another crack at legalizing sports betting – and things went differently this time, albeit not without a little drama. The Walters-backed Bill HB 133 was actually voted down by the house – but after further consideration, it was passed a day later.
From there, Wyoming coasted to legalization and execution. After easily passing through the Senate, the bill landed on the desk of Governor Mark Gordon, who signed it into law in April. BetMGM and DraftKings were approved for licenses and began operations on Sept. 1, just in time for the start of the NFL and NCAA football seasons.
2022: FanDuel enters the WY market
It took longer than anyone expected, but FanDuel became the third operator in Wyoming with a March 10 launch – 3 ½ months after the sportsbook giant as approved by state gaming regulators. PointsBet earned approval in February and was expected to become Wyoming’s fourth sportsbook operator in late spring or early summer.
