Is the 2026 World Cup when it's finally coming home? England hasn't captured World Cup glory since 1966, but every four years, the fans of the Three Lions manage to convince themselves that this will indeed be the year. The England World Cup odds have them listed at +650 to actually get the job done this time.
I'm not as convinced. Thomas Tuchel's squad selection was...interesting. It's not that it's bad, but I don't think that this team is set up to get the job done.

🏆 England World Cup 2026 predictions and best bets
England to reach the quarter-final (-140)
This one is steep, but there's a reason for that. I have faith in England making it to the quarters, but I see a matchup with France in the cards there, and I don't see them coming out on top of that. The -140 odds, with an implied probability of 58.33%, are a bit too low. Historically, we can expect England to make it at least this far, and I'd price this closer to -185, although the value disappears on a risk-reward basis before that number.
There is no one in Group L that will be able to handle England's attack or penetrate its defense, so a finish at the top of the group should be expected. The newly-formed Round of 32 will present a third-placed finisher to the England side, and whichever one it is should be easily dispatched. The expansion of the field to 48 teams will mean that weaker sides reach the knockout rounds, and England is strong and experienced enough to handle whichever one it has to face
In the round of 16, England should be able to use its transitional speed on the wings to take advantage of Mexico. But that's where the buck stops. The unrivaled French frontline will cause fits for the England defense, and their midfield players, such as Aurelien Tchouameni and Adrien Rabiot, will neutralize the England possession game. France central defender William Saliba has done an admirable job shutting down England's Harry Kane when they've met on their club teams.
I'm happy with this until the -150 range, after that the value is starting to disappear. At that range I would likely lean heavier into the "to be eliminated in the quarter-finals (+350) wager.
🔬 SBR EDGE: The Tactical Unlock
The Pick: England to reach the quarter-final (-140)
The Why: Tuchel's squad and its depth on the wings should easily dispatch the rest of Group L and its Round of 32 and 16 opponents, but a French side with a superior midfield and attack is where I draw the line on being convinced England will advance.

⚽ England World Cup 2026 roster
Not surprisingly, England's World Cup roster immediately resulted in a lot of online discourse. Thomas Tuchel clearly had many difficult decisions to make, and it will take until the end of the road for England before we'll know if he made the correct ones. My early assessment is that he hasn't put together a team that will vie for the title.
Tuchel's roster is just too full of head scratchers for me. I don't understand the omission of Harry Maguire in favor of a Dan Burn-type player. The exclusion of Phil Foden and Cole Palmer (despite their subpar seasons), while Jordan Henderson and Noni Madueke made the roster, leaves me wondering about the thought process behind it.
