At long last, the Premier League season is upon us, and my Arsenal vs. Coventry City prediction is breaking down the first fixture of the year. Unsurprisingly, the holders are heavy favorites against the newly promoted visitors, clocking in at -550 on the three-way moneyline. That means we have to look to other markets for our Premier League best bets.

Play from the Emirates is set to get underway at 3 p.m. ET, airing on USA Network and Universio.

Arsenal -2 asian handicap (-108)

Arsenal's defensive baseline was wild last season, with 19 clean sheets, the league's lowest xGA, and the fewest shots/SOT allowed. There's little reason to believe it will change much this year, despite Saliba's absence at the start of the season. The holders have already had one "sort of real game" to start the year, topping Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield.

The question here becomes: can Coventry do enough to prevent a multi-goal Arsenal win? I'm not expecting they can as they take the step to the Premier League. Despite impressive numbers in the Championship last season, this is a whole new ballgame.

A two-goal Arsenal win on the asian handicap returns your wager. I like to win 3-0 very likely, but this provides us some protection.

Score Prediction: Arsenal 3, Coventry 0

🆚 SBR Edge: Welcome to the big leagues

A newly promoted team + on the road + facing the holder + Arsenal home opener...it's about as hard of a first assignment that a team can face.

And newly promoted teams, well, they tend to struggle. Through the 2024-25 season, per the BBC, newly promoted sides had a win rate of just 18.5% and were outscored at a margin of almost 2:1. Over the last six years, which include a couple of unusually strong starts for promoted sides, they're still just 6-7-2, with four of those losses coming with a 3-0 scoreline.

🔥 More Arsenal vs. Coventry expert picks

Arsenal Over 8.5 corners (+163)

This one carries the caveat that Arsenal could take their foot off the gas if they jump out to an early multi-goal lead, and that could seriously affect how things play out. But this is a play on a number that's too good for me to pass up. I'm actually good with this down to about +150 (40% implied probability).

To reach nine corners we mostly need Arsenal to spend a lot of time attacking, and I'm expecting a possession game north of 60%.

If Arsenal scores one goal early, Coventry will need to open up to get back into the game, which should give the Gunners plenty of chances to stay in attack. If Arsenal doesn't score early, that's probably good too, as they'll keep the pressure up against a back line that should sit in a low block.

The base corners prop is Arsenal Over 7.5 (+100), but I'm a bit greedier here. And I wouldn't play both.

Kai Havertz Over 1.5 shots on target (+225)

This price is fantastic given the situation, but it comes with an important asterisk: you want to play this bet at a site like bet365, where "sub on, play on" is the rule of thumb. That means if Havertz comes off early, and Viktor Gyokeres is his direct sub, the wager continues on with the new striker. You can actually get this exact same price on Gyokeres, and I'm playing that, too. One of them will void before the game when they don't start, and they'll likely sub for each other in the second half.

So, now the question is: can the Arsenal 9 get two shots on target against a team playing its first Premier League game since 2000-2001? For me, they absolutely can. Arsenal should have lots of possession and should generate plenty of crosses and cutbacks, and Havertz (or Gyokeres) is a big central target.

Two SOT from the central attacker of the reigning champions is absolutely within the realm of possibility, certainly enough to roll the dice on a +225 line.
