Sun vs. Lynx Predictions, Picks & Odds: Can Minnesota Earn 1st Win of WNBA Campaign?

Last updated: June 1, 2023 6:56 PM EDT • 4 min read X Social Google News Link

The Connecticut Sun face the Minnesota Lynx in Minneapolis, MN on Thursday in the only game on the WNBA's slate. Read on for our Sun vs. Lynx prediction based on the best WNBA odds.
With the obvious caveat that the 2023 WNBA season is still young, these two teams are preparing for much different summers. The Connecticut Sun, who made it to the WNBA Finals in 2022, are contenders once again by the WNBA championship odds and have started the campaign 4-1. That puts them second in the latest standings.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Lynx are at the bottom of the table after their 0-5 start. They're one of two winless teams in the W along with the Seattle Storm, who have opened the season 0-3. Can Minnesota finally get in the win column on Thursday?
Here is our best Sun-Lynx prediction (odds via PointsBet; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

I needed to get creative with this pick because my projections are right in line with the market. I make the Sun a 6-point favorite with a total around 162. The latest betting lines at the best sports betting apps are -5.5 and 161.5, respectively.
But PointsBet's double-result market was grabbing my attention. The price to bet on the Sun to win the first half and the full game dropped from -140 to -115 on Thursday morning, causing me to pounce on the prop. This market is currently only available at a few of our best sports betting sites.

The Sun have been enduring a challenging schedule to start the season, playing the Washington Mystics twice and the New York Liberty once over their five-game stretch. Those are two of the top-four teams in the league, a group the Sun are firmly in as well.
The Sun have generally flexed their muscles while stepping down in competition. They beat the Indiana Fever by a combined 12 points over two meetings, taking the first half by a combined 11 points. Connecticut typically controls the game from start to finish when facing a lower-ranked team.
Enter the Lynx, who are 0-5 and have yet to solve their point guard position. They're 10th in the league in point differential during the first half, whereas the Sun rank fifth in that metric, according to WNBA.com.
The Lynx are especially struggling during the second quarter, when they rank last in the league while averaging 15.6 points per game. Minnesota once scored just three points in the second quarter of its opener against the Chicago Sky, and the squad has held a halftime lead just once thus far.
We're comfortable counting on the Sun to be in front at the break before eventually finishing the job on the road.

Only two of our best sportsbooks offer this market, though it's hard to imagine getting a better deal than PointsBet's offering. We would be willing to pay as much as -135 juice before looking elsewhere for a bet on this game.
Along those same lines, betting on the first-half spread is worth considering. The Sun are laying -2.5 during the first half at FanDuel, a number they should be able to cover on the road.
