Cook Out Southern 500 Predictions & Odds 2026: NASCAR Picks, Props, Best Bets at Darlington

We scored a tidy two-unit profit at Daytona after cleaning up on our matchup bets (thanks, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski!) With the playoffs now underway, let's dive into my NASCAR predictions at Darlington for the 2026 Cook Out Southern 500 as the postseason awaits.

The action is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, at 5 p.m. ET (USA) from Darlington Raceway. Qualifying will get underway on Saturday, September 5, at 4 p.m. ET (truTV).

💡 How to bet NASCAR at Darlington Raceway

Darlington Raceway, or The Track Too Tough To Tame, is a 1.366-mile banked oval with a rough surface and oblong shape. This track chews up tires, so you should target those who know how to manage their equipment. Racecraft, not raw speed, tends to rule the day here. 

Tracks that produce a lot of tire wear forced drivers to slip and slide around, which disproportionately rewards those with experience on dirt, where such conditions are the norm. The case in point is Chase Briscoe, a driver who cut his teeth on such tracks and has won the last two Southern 500s. 

The lack of adequate comparator venues means we’ll lean heavily on the results from this spring and historical results at Darlington. We’ll also look at “momentum,” or general raw speed from this year, as we’ll want to fade the struggling Chevrolet camp.

Christopher Bell, Joe Gibbs Racing (No. 20)

While the other Toyota drivers have racked up several wins this year, Bell has been putting together a very consistent season despite failing to find Victory Lane. Bell now has seven runner-up finishes to his name so far. At odds of +1100 (8.3%) on Caesars, we’re getting him at a steep discount relative to his peers, like Hamlin, Reddick, and Briscoe.

Bell has a dirt background, and, while he has yet to win at Darlington in the Cup Series, he won the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race from the pole here in August 2024. He also ran a triple-header here in the spring and will be in the broadcast booth during this fall’s O’Reilly event. Few drivers have put forth more effort into improving at Darlington than Bell.

I’m concerned by Bell’s lack of speed here in the spring, but his runner-up finish at Chicagoland, another track with a ton of tire wear, gives me hope that the No. 20 team has figured something out. Let’s back Bell to nab his first win of the season – or at least another top 10 – in this weekend’s crown jewel event.

Ryan Preece, RFK Racing (No. 60)

Preece may not have a dirt background, but the books are simply underestimating his odds at the 2026 Southern 500 following his breakthrough win last weekend. Preece’s teammates at RFK Racing were both top 4 by average green-flag speed here in the spring and are +2500 (3.9%) or shorter to win outright, a far cry from the +6000 (1.6%) for him available at Caesars. Preece was eighth by average green-flag speed here in the spring himself and was 12th in the metric in the last Southern 500. His time on short tracks has made him one of the best in the field at tire management, and I expect that to pay dividends on Sunday.

Noah Gragson, Front Row Motorsports (No. 4)

Darlington can produce some surprise winners. Chase Briscoe won here in a major upset for a shuttering Stewart-Haas Racing program in 2024. Erik Jones came through as a +8000 long shot in 2022. Oh, and who can forget Regan Smith’s out-of-nowhere win for Furniture Row Racing in 2011? With the No. 4 team looking much better over recent weeks, Noah Gragson stands out at +50000 (0.2%) to win and +1800 (5.3%) to score a top 10. Gragson is a two-time winner here in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and has the best average green-flag speed at Front Row Motorsports here in the spring.
