The Kentucky Derby is one of the most unpredictable races in sports, but the right betting strategy and my Kentucky Derby picks can still provide an edge when this 20-horse field breaks from the gate for the 152nd “Run for the Roses” at Churchill Downs.

Below, I break down how I’m structuring my bets, including exacta, trifecta, and superfecta plays for Saturday’s race.

🏇 How does Kentucky Derby betting work?

Betting on the Kentucky Derby works differently than traditional sports betting because it uses a pari-mutuel system. Instead of locking in odds when you place a bet, all wagers go into a shared pool. After the race, the track takes a cut, and the remaining pool is divided among winning tickets - so the odds you see before the race can change right up until post time.

You can bet on simple outcomes like Win (1st place), Place (top 2), or Show (top 3), or go for more complex wagers like Exacta (top 2 in order), Trifecta (top 3 in order), and Superfecta (top 4 in order), which offer bigger payouts but are harder to hit.

Because there are 20 horses, bettors often use strategies like boxing (covering all finishing orders among selected horses) or keying (locking one horse into a specific position) to improve their chances.

What is an exacta, trifecta, and superfecta?

In horse racing, an exacta requires picking the first- and second-place finishers in the correct order. A trifecta extends that by requiring the top three finishers in exact order, while a superfecta selects the first four finishers in exact order.

These wagers offer higher payouts but are significantly more difficult to hit due to the added combinations, similar to a parlay in sports betting. When you “box” these selections, you are covering all possible finishing orders among your chosen horses, meaning they can finish in any order within those positions and still cash your ticket.

How do payouts work in horse racing?

Reminder, the odds you bet this at are not final price as it is in sports betting. The odds are finalized after the race concludes, as they are determined by the pari-mutuel system. This means payouts are based on the total pool of money wagered and how many winning tickets there are, not a fixed line at the time of your bet. Because of this, odds can fluctuate up until post time, and even heavily favored horses can return lower payouts depending on betting volume.

🐴 Kentucky Derby exacta pick

Exacta box

  • Chief Wallabee (12)
  • Renegade (1)

Renegade and Chief Wallabee make for an exciting exacta pairing in the Kentucky Derby due to their complementary running styles and upside. Renegade profiles as a strong, tactical speed horse who should secure ideal positioning early, avoiding traffic in a crowded 20-horse field. That kind of trip is critical at Churchill Downs, where early placement often dictates late success.

Chief Wallabee, on the other hand, brings closing ability and stamina and is a serious threat to surge late as the pace softens. If Renegade sets or tracks a manageable tempo, he can hold pace down the stretch, while Chief Wallabee has the pedigree and finishing kick to run him down or secure second.

🐴 Kentucky Derby trifecta pick

Trifecta box

  • Renegade (1)
  • The Puma (9)
  • Commandment (6)

I like Wallabee, and he's a closer, but Commandment is a safer bet with the same profile, while still getting long odds by combining with the favorite Renegade and sleeper The Puma.

Renegade, The Puma, and Commandment form a well-balanced trifecta combination in the Kentucky Derby thanks to their diverse running styles and overall upside. Renegade offers tactical speed, is my favorite horse in the 2026 Kentucky Derby, and should secure strong early positioning, which is crucial in a crowded field at Churchill Downs.

The Puma adds versatility, capable of stalking the pace and making a move around the far turn, putting himself in prime contention turning for home. Commandment complements the ticket as a late closer with stamina, ideal for picking off tiring horses in the stretch.

🐴 Kentucky Derby superfecta pick

Superfecta box

  • Chief Wallabee (12)
  • So Happy (8)
  • The Puma (9)
  • Further Ado (18)

As you can probably tell, I like to mix and match my picks for the Kentucky Derby in case one horse has a bad showing. And if the favorite Renegade stumbles out of the gate - a distinct possibility given his inside post - I like these four horses to take advantage.

Chief Wallabee, So Happy, The Puma, and Further Ado create a strong superfecta combination in the Kentucky Derby thanks to their balanced profiles and ability to cover multiple race scenarios. Chief Wallabee brings late-closing power which is ideal for picking off tiring leaders in the stretch at Churchill Downs.

So Happy offers tactical speed and should be involved early to secure a forward position. The Puma adds versatility, capable of stalking and making a timely move, while Further Ado provides depth as another horse who can stay on late and capitalize if the pace collapses.
