The Belmont Stakes is one of the most unpredictable events in sports, but the right betting strategy and my Belmont Stakes picks can still provide an edge when this 9-horse field breaks from the gate for the 158th “The Test of the Champion” at Saratoga Race Course.

🏇 How does Belmont Stakes betting work?

Betting on the Belmont Stakes works differently than traditional sports betting because it uses a pari-mutuel system. Instead of locking in odds when you place a bet, all wagers go into a shared pool. After the race, the track takes a cut, and the remaining pool is divided among winning tickets - so the odds you see before the race can change right up until post time.

You can bet on simple outcomes like Win (1st place), Place (top 2), or Show (top 3), or go for more complex wagers like Exacta (top 2 in order), Trifecta (top 3 in order), and Superfecta (top 4 in order), which offer bigger payouts but are harder to hit.

Because there are 20 horses, bettors often use strategies like boxing (covering all finishing orders among selected horses) or keying (locking one horse into a specific position) to improve their chances.

What is an exacta, trifecta, and superfecta? 

In horse racing, an exacta requires picking the first- and second-place finishers in the correct order. A trifecta extends that by requiring the top three finishers in exact order, while a superfecta selects the first four finishers in exact order.

These wagers offer higher payouts but are significantly more difficult to hit due to the added combinations, similar to a parlay in sports betting. When you “box” these selections, you are covering all possible finishing orders among your chosen horses, meaning they can finish in any order within those positions and still cash your ticket.

How do payouts work in horse racing?

Reminder, the odds you bet this at are not final price as it is in sports betting. The odds are finalized after the race concludes, as they are determined by the pari-mutuel system. This means payouts are based on the total pool of money wagered and how many winning tickets there are, not a fixed line at the time of your bet. Because of this, odds can fluctuate up until post time, and even heavily favored horses can return lower payouts depending on betting volume.

Renegade projects as a forwardly placed runner who should secure excellent early position and stay clear of traffic, a valuable advantage in a compact field at Saratoga. If he breaks well, he could control the race or sit just off the pace entering the far turn.

Chief Wallabee offers a different profile, relying on stamina and a powerful late kick to make his move in the stretch. As the leaders begin to tire, he has the ability to close ground quickly and challenge for the top spots. A race shape that allows Renegade to dictate comfortable fractions while Chief Wallabee rallies from behind creates a realistic path for both horses to finish first and second, making them an appealing exacta pairing.

I still have plenty of interest in Wallabee, who now serves as the value horse I want to use underneath in exotic wagers. His late-running style mirrors that of Commandment, but Chief Wallabee offers a more appealing risk-reward profile at longer odds. Including both alongside race favorite Renegade creates a trifecta ticket that blends consistency, value, and significant upside if the race unfolds as expected.

Renegade, Wallabee, and Golden Tempo make for a compelling trifecta combination because each horse brings a unique skill set to the Belmont Stakes. Renegade is my top selection in the 2026 Belmont and possesses the tactical speed needed to secure favorable early position, a key factor over Saratoga’s demanding layout.

Wallabee adds another dangerous closing threat to the ticket, with the ability to sit comfortably off the pace before launching his run around the far turn. Golden Tempo rounds out the trifecta as a proven stamina horse with a reliable late kick, giving him every chance to capitalize if the pace is contested early and the front-runners begin to weaken in the final furlongs.

As you can probably tell, I prefer spreading my exposure across multiple contenders in the Belmont Stakes. That approach leads me to include Commandment as a live 6-1 long shot with enough upside to crash the exotics and potentially outperform his odds.

Chief Wallabee, Renegade, Golden Tempo, and Commandment combine to form a well-rounded superfecta ticket because they account for several possible race developments. Chief Wallabee brings a powerful late-closing style, making him especially dangerous if the pace is contested and the front-runners begin to tire over Saratoga’s demanding surface.

Renegade provides tactical speed and projects to secure favorable early positioning, while Golden Tempo offers another runner capable of staying involved near the front before making his move. Commandment rounds out the ticket as a proven closer with the stamina to finish strongly, giving him a legitimate chance to pass fading rivals in the stretch. Together, the four horses provide a balanced mix of speed, versatility, and late-race finishing ability.
