The Padres outlasted their bitter rivals when they met in last year's NLDS, and I love their chances with Nick Pivetta on the mound opposite Dustin May.

Pivetta has quietly been a gem for the Friars this season, allowing two or fewer runs in eight of his 12 starts this season while lasting at least six innings in eight of those 12 - including four straight contests entering tonight's matchup.

I don't have the same confidence in May, whose Pitching Ninja highlights obscure a rather pedestrian start. Among 94 starters with at least 60 innings pitched, May ranks outside the top 30 in strikeout rate (24.2%) and outside the top 50 in ERA (4.09), FIP (4.02), and zone contact rate (89.1%).
