Best NRFI Bets Today: MLB No Run First Inning Picks for Monday, Sept. 21
My NRFI picks are 6-2 over the last two days, and my best NRFI bets today look to continue that momentum amid Monday’s small three-game MLB slate.
Trey Yesavage makes his first start for the Toronto Blue Jays since Aug. 4, and I expect him to match zeros with Baltimore Orioles righty Shane Baz. I also look at the Twins-Giants interleague matchup with the second of my two NRFI wagers.

Blue Jays vs. Orioles (6:35 p.m. ET)
- Trey Yesavage (3.65 ERA) vs. Shane Baz (4.11 ERA)
- NRFI records: Blue Jays (78-79) vs. Angels (87-69)
Shane Baz has solid career numbers against current Blue Jays batters, holding them to a combined .219/.260/.280 slash line over 73 at-bats. Perhaps the most impressive part is that just three of his 16 hits allowed have gone for extra bases, with one home run.
Trey Yesavage had made quality starts in four of six outings prior to his injury. It is somewhat concerning that his average fastball velocity sat at 93.3 mph in his last rehab outing of 34 pitches. But he allowed just two hits over five innings in his only road start at the Orioles this year, and I expect much better control than his seven walks.

- Zebby Matthews (4.74 ERA) vs. Blade Tidwell (4.56 ERA)

Minnesota is MLB’s second-most profitable YRFI team, and has cashed it in two-thirds of its road games. But a chilly night in Oracle Park should limit offense early.
Zebby Matthews is coming off arguably his best start of the season, holding the Yankees scoreless over six innings while allowing just two hits. The Tigers and White Sox tagged Matthews for nine earned runs in 7.1 innings prior to that start, but Matthews has been great against non-divisional rivals. Before facing the Yankees, he allowed two earned runs with an 11:2 K:BB ratio in his previous two starts against teams outside the AL Central (spanning 12.2 innings).
Blade Tidwell has pitched better than his 4.60 ERA in September suggests, as he has allowed a .182 OBA in 15.2 innings.

But between Shane Baz’s excellent career numbers against Toronto and Zebby Matthews' run of solid starts against teams outside the AL Central, I feel confident about my two NRFI plays and subsequent SGP.
