Monday’s 10-game Major League Baseball slate features several matchups between teams in divisional or wild card races, but my best NRFI bets today finds better value on other games that don’t necessarily have a direct impact on tight playoff races.

My top NRFI pick comes from the Mariners vs. Angels divisional rivalry where a rookie is making just his fifth career MLB start. And while it seems counterintuitive to back a YRFI play with a two-time Cy Young Award winner toeing the rubber, that is the respect I have for the Dodgers offense.

💰 Best NRFI bet today

Mariners vs. Angels (9:38 p.m. ET)

  • Kade Anderson (4.29 ERA) vs. Reid Detmers (3.32 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Mariners (68-82) vs. Angels (75-74)

For an idea of how bad the Angels have played, they recently went 1-6 in a seven-start stretch by Reid Detmers despite the southpaw allowing a .177 opponents’ batting average. Detmers has pitched to a 1.37 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and 10.3 K/9 in his first 10 starts since the All-Star Break, and he is nine strikeouts away from becoming the first Angels left-handed pitcher with a 200-K season since Chuck Finley in 1999.

On the other side, Kade Anderson has used his unfamiliarity with opponents to allow just one first-inning run in four starts.

📡 SBR Edge: A tremendous second half

Reid Detmers' 1.37 ERA since the All-Star Break is the lowest in the Majors among pitchers who have thrown a minimum of 40 innings (the next lowest is Jesus Luzardo at 1.84).

🔥 YRFI picks today

Dodgers vs. Reds (6:40 ET)

  • Tarik Skubal (2.84 ERA) vs. Nick Lodolo (5.12 ERA)
  • YRFI records: Dodgers (74-75) vs. Reds (80-69)

Los Angeles entered Sunday amid an eight-game winning streak during which it averaged 6.3 runs. It should again find early offense against a Cincinnati team who lost five straight games last week while being outscored 56-15.

The YRFI has cashed in each of Nick Lodolo’s last two starts, which is why I’m comfortable relying on the Dodgers to cash this wager by scoring in the first inning. That’s because Los Angeles has won each of Tarik Skubal’s last four starts, while he has gone 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 29:4 K:BB rate.

🚀 Best NRFI/YRFI parlay today

This two-leg NRFI/YRFI parlay dives deeper into the data and bucks certain trends based on what the starting pitchers involved have produced. For example, Seattle is the fourth-most profitable YRFI team in the Majors, but we're getting great value on an NRFI play involving the Mariners because of how well Reid Detmers has pitched. Along the same wavelength, while most will jump at the opportunity to back the NRFI in a game Tarik Skubal is pitching, it only takes one team to score to cash a YRFI play, which I'm banking on being the Dodgers.

❓ NRFI betting FAQ

What does NRFI mean in baseball betting?

NRFI stands for "No Run First Inning." It's a popular MLB bet that neither team will score in the first inning of a game, and the bet settles after just six outs (three per half-inning).

What does YRFI mean?

YRFI stands for "Yes Run First Inning" - the opposite of an NRFI. This MLB prop bet cashes if there's at least one run by either team in the first inning.

What should I look for when betting NRFIs?

Each team's starting pitcher is the biggest factor in cashing a NRFI bet, but you should also focus on each team's NRFI records (home vs. away) and each lineup's first-inning tendencies. Recent form can also play a bigger role than full-season numbers.
