My Virginia Tech vs. SMU prediction focuses on the offensive success of both teams this season.

Both ACC programs enter this matchup with top-30 scoring offenses, and I'm expecting both to shine against defenses that aren't as good as the overall statistics suggest. SMU is a 5.5-point betting favorite Friday, with kickoff from Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN).

Over 56.5 (-108 via DraftKings)

This is going to be a very offensive game, as SMU is averaging 35.3 points per game while Virginia Tech is averaging 35.0. While both defenses are allowing 22.3 or fewer points per game, I love this matchup for SMU's passing attack. Led by Kevin Jennings, SMU is averaging 318 passing yards per game, tied for the seventh-most in the nation. Virginia Tech ranks 78th in passing yards allowed per game and 82nd in yards allowed per attempt.

Virginia Tech's passing game faces a tougher challenge, but it is still a unit averaging 284.4 yards per game. While SMU leads the ACC in pass defense, Virginia Tech has one of the most explosive passing attacks in the conference. The Hokies have 33 20-yard and 15 30-yard passes this season. With nine 40-yard passes, they rank tied for fourth in the conference, just one behind Miami and Louisville.

📡 SBR Edge

When these teams get into the red zone, they succeed. Virginia Tech has scored on 29 of its 34 red-zone chances this season, and SMU has been even better, scoring on 33 of 38 chances. SMU also has a 71.05% red-zone touchdown rate, which ranks 24th in the country.

Turnovers will lead to short fields for both teams

While both of these teams have forced just six turnovers this season, tied for the fewest in the ACC, I'm expecting a lot more takeaways in this game. The main reason is that these are two of the worst teams in the nation when it comes to protecting the ball.

SMU has 11 turnovers, tied for the third-most in the ACC, and a turnover differential of -5. Not only is that turnover margin tied for the second-worst mark in the ACC, but it ranks 119th nationally. Virginia Tech is barely better, with 10 turnovers and a -4 turnover differential.

Play to: Over 59.5

Score prediction: SMU 34, Virginia Tech 31
