Welcome to the 2026 college football season. Perhaps the North Carolina Tar Heels and the TCU Horned Frogs will eventually regret their Dublin trip like last year’s participants did, but for now, they can both dream of a win in Ireland kickstarting a season.

My North Carolina vs. TCU predictions put measured faith in the underdog before kickoff at 12 ET on Saturday, August 29, in Dublin on ESPN.

North Carolina +9.5 (-112 via DraftKings)

In a perfect world, perhaps this is available at +10, but if the spread moves that far, it will not stay there long. This +9.5 is itself a surprise. The North Carolina Tar Heels are worse than the TCU Horned Frogs. Absolutely. No doubt about it. But this opening game in Dublin has a penchant for going Under its total, and that lessens the chances of a blowout.

Furthermore, as terribly as Bill Belichick has adapted to the college game, he should still find an edge with the inherent added prep time of a season opener. Mostly, though, this spread has just climbed too high.

Dublin has favored the nerds. No, really. The nerdier school has won all 10 games in Dublin. At some point, that becomes less of a joke and more of a trend. Even if North Carolina does not spring this upset, something about this environment should give the Tar Heels enough of an edge to exceed expectations.

Score prediction: TCU 24, North Carolina 17
