My best Houston vs. Texas Tech prediction focuses on the defense of No. 22 Houston against the struggling offense of No. 13 Texas Tech. The Red Radiers are favored by 7.5, but I believe Houston is being undervalued by oddsmakers despite this game being played at Galaxy Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.

With the Big 12 seemingly wide open this season, Friday's 8 p.m. ET game will give one of these teams a clear path to the Big 12 title game. The contest will air on FOX and stream on FOX One.

Houston +7.5 (-110 via FanDuel)

Despite multiple double-digit wins, Texas Tech hasn't looked convincing this season. The Red Raiders have scored 68 points, but touchdowns with under 3:00 remaining in each game are inflating that total. The offense managed just 352 yards and was outgained by 120 yards against Oregon State last week.

Despite an excellent completion percentage, Will Hammond has struggled thus far. He threw for only 189 yards last week, and he was sacked four times. I expect him to be under constant pressure from a Houston defense that has 5.0 sacks this season.

So far, Texas Tech has leaned on running back J'Koby Williams, who has 187 rushing yards, two touchdowns, and a 5.7 yards-per-carry average. But Houston currently has the best rushing defense in the nation and held Oregon State to just 26 rushing yards in Week 1.

📡 SBR Edge

Texas Tech ranks 71st out of 85 FBS teams in points scored against FCS opponents this season.

Texas Tech's pass defense is in trouble

After leading the nation in rush defense last season, Texas Tech's run defense has again been excellent to start the season. Teams are averaging just 1.7 yards per carry and 65 yards per game thus far.

However, the Texas Tech pass defense was disastrous last week, allowing 413 yards to Braden Atkinson. Houston starting quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 305 yards against Oregon State in Week 1, and I expect him and Amare Thomas to connect enough to lead Houston to an outright win in this game.

Score prediction: Houston 21 Texas Tech 20
